Yaskawa GA500 Industrial AC Microdrive

Description

Overview

The Yaskawa GA500 is a compact industrial AC microdrive designed by Yaskawa for ten years of continuous operation. It covers 240 V single-phase ratings from 1/6 to 5 HP, 240 V three-phase from 1/6 to 30 HP and 480 V three-phase up to 40 HP, roughly 0.1 to 30 kW, and it controls induction, permanent magnet and synchronous reluctance motors with the same hardware. The Yaskawa GA500 targets the small motors that make up most of a plant: conveyors, pumps, fans, mixers and machine axes.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Yaskawa GA500 to panel builders, OEMs and plant maintenance teams across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. We help customers choose the correct rating, duty class and options, and we can advise on replacing older small drives with the Yaskawa GA500 using parameter conversion tools.

Operating Principle

A variable frequency drive rectifies the incoming AC supply to a DC bus and then uses IGBT switching to synthesize a new three-phase output of variable voltage and frequency. Controlling the frequency controls motor speed, so pumps and fans can run only as fast as the process requires. The Yaskawa GA500 offers V/f control, open loop vector control for induction and permanent magnet motors, advanced open loop vector for PM motors and EZ open loop vector, with output frequency up to 590 Hz as standard. Open loop zero speed and torque control of PM motors is possible without an encoder.

Energy saving is built in. An automatic energy optimizer adjusts the motor flux to the actual load, which Yaskawa states can deliver up to 6 % more savings with induction motors at low speed and around 2 % more with PM motors compared with a conventional drive. The integrated PID controller with sleep function keeps constant pressure in pumping systems, speed search restarts coasting fans smoothly, and kinetic energy ride-through keeps the process running through short dips in the supply.

Engineering Design of the Yaskawa GA500

The Yaskawa GA500 uses a book-style housing in IP20 protected chassis form, with an optional UL Type 1 kit. Drives can be mounted side-by-side, units up to 7.5 HP snap onto DIN rail with an adapter, and an external heatsink kit moves heat outside the cabinet. Cables enter from the bottom into finger-safe cage clamp terminals, and the main circuit can be accessed without removing the cover. Printed circuit boards are conformally coated to IEC 60721-3-3 classes 3C2 and 3S2 for dust and chemical gases, and the drive operates from -10 °C to +50 °C without derating, up to +60 °C with derating.

The removable LED keypad has an LED status ring and backs up and copies parameters. A USB port allows programming from a PC or phone even when the drive is still in its box and unpowered, and a 24 VDC input keeps the controller and network alive when main power is off. Standard I/O includes seven digital inputs, two analog inputs (0–10 V or 4–20 mA), a pulse input, two STO inputs, a fault relay, two photocoupler outputs, an analog output, a pulse output and RS-485 Modbus RTU. Option cards add EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, PROFIBUS-DP, Modbus/TCP, EtherCAT, CANopen and others.

Key Features

Engineers specify the Yaskawa GA500 for these reasons:

  • One drive for induction, interior and surface permanent magnet and synchronous reluctance motors.
  • Dual-channel Safe Torque Off certified to SIL3 and PLe, without external safety contactors.
  • Embedded Modbus RTU, and up to five drives networked through a single communication option card.
  • Integrated braking transistor, with optional built-in EMC filter.
  • Programming without main power through USB and the DriveWizard Mobile app.
  • DriveWorksEZ graphical logic with more than 400 function blocks to replace a small PLC.
  • Coated PCBs for harsh environments and a design life of ten years.
  • Normal duty 110 % for 60 s or heavy duty 150 % for 60 s overload ratings.

Industrial Applications

In Oman and the GCC the Yaskawa GA500 fits small booster and dosing pumps in water networks, cooling tower and AHU fans in district cooling plants, conveyors in cement and mining operations, and auxiliary drives on oil and gas skids. Its PID function maintains constant water pressure, and coated electronics suit the dusty, hot environments common in the region. For larger motors or closed-loop duties the Yaskawa GA700 high performance AC drive continues the same programming structure, so maintenance staff use one family of drives across power ranges.

Machine builders in the Sohar and Rusayl industrial areas use the Yaskawa GA500 because of its compact footprint, side-by-side mounting and embedded safety. Compared with other small drives such as the Control Techniques Unidrive M701 or HVAC-focused models like the Danfoss VLT HVAC Drive FC 102, the Yaskawa GA500 stands out for its multi-motor flexibility and its unpowered programming. Seven Star LLC supplies the drive together with keypads, communication cards, EMC filters, reactors and braking resistors.

When requesting a quotation, please specify supply voltage and phase, motor kW and current, normal or heavy duty, whether an EMC filter is needed and the fieldbus used on site. These details define the Yaskawa GA500 catalog code and options.

About brand
Variable speed drives are the Yaskawa products most plant electricians meet first, usually on a pump, fan or conveyor. The company dates from 1915 and is based in Kitakyushu, Japan, and it also makes servo systems, robots and PLCs. Seven Star LLC supplies Yaskawa AC drives and control hardware in Oman. Listed here are the GA500 and GA700 drives and two 300S CPUs that many users still know under the VIPA name.

Yaskawa drives and VIPA controllers listed here

The GA500 is the compact microdrive for small motors and machine applications, and the GA700 is the general-purpose drive for larger motors and more demanding control. The GA500 is the follow-on to the V1000, and Yaskawa publishes a transition guide between the two. On the control side, the 315-2AG23 (CPU 315SB/DPM) and 315-4NE23 (CPU 315SN/NET) are SPEED7 processors of the 300S system, programmed with Siemens STEP 7 tools.

Ordering Yaskawa drives and CPUs: what we need

For a drive, send the full catalog code from the nameplate (it starts with CIPR-GA50 or CIPR-GA70), which fixes the voltage class, current rating and enclosure. Add the motor power and current, supply voltage, duty (normal or heavy) and any fieldbus option card. For a VIPA CPU, send the order number and the hardware and firmware version on the front label. We supply across the GCC and check each code against Yaskawa documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which motors can the Yaskawa GA500 control?
The Yaskawa GA500 controls induction motors, interior and surface permanent magnet motors and synchronous reluctance motors. This lets one drive model serve many applications and simplifies spare parts.
Does the Yaskawa GA500 have built-in safety?
Yes. It has dual-channel Safe Torque Off certified to SIL3 per IEC 61508 and PLe per EN ISO 13849-1, so emergency stop functions can be implemented without additional motor contactors in many machines.
Can the Yaskawa GA500 be programmed without power?
Yes. Connecting a PC or mobile device to the USB port allows parameters to be set even while the drive is unpowered or still in its box. An external 24 VDC supply can also keep the controller and network running without main power.
What communication options does the Yaskawa GA500 support?
Modbus RTU over RS-485 is built in. Option cards add EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, PROFIBUS-DP, Modbus/TCP, EtherCAT, CANopen, DeviceNet, CC-Link, MECHATROLINK and others, and one card can network up to five drives.
