Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000/70-50 Inverter Charger
Overview
The Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000 (full designation MultiPlus-II 48/5000/70-50 230V) is a combined inverter and battery charger from Victron Energy for 48 V battery systems. It delivers 5000 VA of continuous output at 25 °C, charges the battery at up to 70 A and passes up to 50 A of grid or generator power through its built-in transfer switch. Victron describes the MultiPlus-II as having all the features of the original MultiPlus plus an external current sensor option and Energy Storage System (ESS) functionality with anti-islanding, so the Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000 can work both as a backup power source and as the heart of a grid-connected solar self-consumption system.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000 and related Victron components in Oman and across the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. Many enquiries for a solar inverter in Muscat actually concern hybrid systems for villas, farms, remote cabins, telecom shelters and small commercial premises that want to keep critical loads running during outages and use more of their own PV generation, and this is the duty the Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000 was designed for.
Operating Principle of the Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000
When grid or generator power is available, the Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000 passes it through to the loads and uses spare capacity to charge the 48 V battery with an adaptive charge profile; the datasheet lists absorption voltage 57.6 V, float voltage 55.2 V and storage mode 52.8 V for 48 V models. If the AC input fails, the internal transfer switch opens and the inverter takes over the supply in less than 20 milliseconds, which Victron states is fast enough for computers and other electronic equipment to continue operating without disruption. The inverter output is 230 VAC ± 2 % at 50 Hz ± 0.1 %, adjustable to 60 Hz.
Two functions make the Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000 particularly useful with weak supplies. PowerControl lets the user set a maximum grid or generator current; the unit takes account of other AC loads and uses only what remains for charging, preventing generator overload. PowerAssist goes further: when loads exceed the limit for short periods, the Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000 adds power from the battery in parallel with the source, then recharges when demand falls. In ESS mode, data from the optional external current sensor or an energy meter is used to optimise self-consumption and, if required, prevent feed-in to the grid, while critical loads remain supplied during a power cut.
Engineering Design of the Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000
The Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000 is housed in a steel enclosure in blue RAL 5012 with IP22 protection, intended for indoor or sheltered installation. Victron gives an operating temperature range of −40 to +65 °C with fan-assisted cooling, up to 95 % non-condensing humidity and a maximum altitude of 2000 m. Continuous output power derates with temperature: 4000 W at 25 °C, 3700 W at 40 °C and 3000 W at 65 °C, while peak power reaches 9000 W. Maximum efficiency across the 5 kVA models is listed as 95 to 96 %, and in Search mode the zero-load consumption drops to a few watts.
The battery connects with M8 bolts and the DC input range for 48 V models is 38 to 66 V. AC input range is 187 to 265 VAC at 45 to 65 Hz. The Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000 has two AC outputs: the main output with no-break function, and an auxiliary output rated 50 A that is live only when AC input is present, useful for loads such as water heaters that should not drain the battery. A programmable relay can be set for general alarm, DC undervoltage or generator start/stop. The VE.Bus port allows parallel and three-phase operation, remote monitoring and system integration, and two general-purpose communication ports and remote on-off are provided. Configuration uses VEConfigure with an MK3-USB interface or VictronConnect.
Key Features
Victron lists the following functions for the Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000 and the MultiPlus-II range.
- Uninterrupted AC supply with transfer in less than 20 ms when grid or generator power is lost.
- PowerControl and PowerAssist manage limited grid or generator capacity and boost it from the battery.
- Built-in anti-islanding and ESS functionality allow grid-parallel solar self-consumption systems.
- Up to six units can run in parallel, and three units can be configured for three-phase output.
- Compatible with both MPPT solar charge controllers on the DC side and grid-tie PV inverters on the AC side.
- Two AC outputs separate critical loads from loads that should run only when external AC is present.
- Remote monitoring through a Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX and the free VRM portal, with alarms by email or push notification.
- Protection against output short circuit, overload, battery over- and undervoltage, over-temperature, 230 VAC on the output and high input ripple.
Industrial Applications
In Oman the Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000 is well suited to villas and residential compounds that want backup during outages, farms and date plantations with pumps and cold rooms, rural telecom and monitoring shelters, security and CCTV systems, and small offices and clinics. In off-grid sites it is commonly paired with a diesel generator, where PowerControl and PowerAssist keep generator size and run hours down while the battery covers short load peaks and night-time demand.
For marine and mobile use, such as boats in Muscat and Salalah marinas or service vehicles, Victron also positions the MultiPlus-II for professional marine, yachting and vehicle applications. Seven Star LLC supplies the Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000 together with GX monitoring devices, current sensors and compatible batteries, and our Muscat team helps clients in Oman and the GCC size battery banks and select between single, parallel and three-phase configurations.
