Victron SmartSolar MPPT 250/100-Tr VE.Can Charge Controller
Description
The Victron Energy SmartSolar MPPT 250/100-Tr VE.Can is a 100 A solar charge controller that accepts up to 250 V open-circuit PV voltage and charges 12, 24, 36 or 48 V battery banks. The VE.Can interface makes it the version of choice for larger systems where several controllers are networked to a GX device and share charging information.
Ultra-fast tracking with a CAN-bus link
Victron quotes ultra-fast MPPT that improves harvest by up to 30 % against PWM controllers on cloudy days, plus a partial-shading algorithm that looks for the best of several maximum power points. Maximum efficiency exceeds 99 %, and there is no cooling fan. The controller has Bluetooth built in, and a Smart Battery Sense, a BMV-712 Smart battery monitor or a SmartShunt can pass battery voltage, temperature and, for the last two, current to it. An optional pluggable display fits on the front.
Up to 25 units can be synchronised through VE.Can, or up to 10 over Bluetooth, and each controller can be monitored individually on a Color Control GX or other GX device and on the VRM portal. A fully discharged battery recovery function restarts charging from zero volts, and eight pre-programmed charge algorithms can be selected with a rotary switch.

Selecting the right 250 V model
The datasheet also lists the 250/70 and 250/85 sizes (70 A and 85 A). Choose the size from the battery voltage and array power: a 48 V bank reaches 5,800 W on this model, while a 12 V bank is limited to 1,450 W. Always size strings so that the cold-weather open-circuit voltage stays below 250 V and the start-up voltage exceeds battery voltage plus 5 V. MC4 versions need splitter pairs to parallel strings because each MC4 connector is limited to 30 A. See the Victron MultiPlus-II for the inverter side of an off-grid system and Solar Power for related products.
How the Victron MPPT 250/100-Tr VE.Can works
A maximum power point tracking controller measures the PV voltage and current many times a second and adjusts its input so the array delivers the most power for the light and temperature at that moment. The MPPT 250/100-Tr VE.Can then converts this power to the battery voltage and charges the battery in several stages. The VE.Can port links the controller to a CAN-bus network, so it can share data with a GX device and with other controllers.
Where the MPPT 250/100-Tr VE.Can is used
- Larger off-grid and hybrid solar systems
- Telecom and remote monitoring sites
- Sites with several controllers on one network
- Marine and mobile installations with big arrays
- Systems monitored through a GX device and VRM
Selection checklist for the MPPT 250/100-Tr VE.Can
- Battery voltage of 12, 24 or 48 V, or 36 V set manually
- Charge current of up to 100 A
- PV open-circuit voltage of no more than 250 V
- PV power of 1,450 W at 12 V and 5,800 W at 48 V
- Short-circuit current of up to 70 A
- Screw terminals for the PV wires, the Tr version
- VE.Can network and the number of units
- Battery sensing with a Smart Battery Sense or a battery monitor
Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes
Check that the open-circuit voltage of the string, at the lowest temperature, stays under 250 V. Connect the battery first and then the PV array, and fit a battery temperature sensor. Set the battery type with the rotary switch or the VictronConnect app. For a network, connect the VE.Can cable with a terminator at each end. Keep the controller where air can pass, as it has no fan.

About brand
A battery-based backup or off-grid system needs one device that inverts, charges the battery and switches between AC sources. In the Victron Energy program that device is the MultiPlus-II inverter charger. Victron Energy, founded in 1975 and based in Almere, Netherlands, makes inverters, chargers and battery systems.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list the MultiPlus-II 48/5000/70-50 and source Victron inverter chargers for buyers in Oman.
Reading the Victron MultiPlus-II 48/5000/70-50 model name
The name carries the main ratings: a 48 V battery system, 5000 VA inverter output, a 70 A battery charger and a 50 A AC transfer switch. Victron's documentation gives a 230 VAC output and continuous power of 4000 W at 25 °C, falling to 3700 W at 40 °C. The unit supports Victron's PowerControl and PowerAssist functions for use with a limited grid or generator supply.
Ordering Victron Energy equipment: what we need
Send the complete model name, state if you need the standard or the GX version, and give the battery voltage and battery type. Tell us if the unit will run alone, in parallel or in a three-phase group, and the ambient temperature at the site, which matters in the GCC. We check the model against Victron documentation and provide the manufacturer's datasheet on request.
