Victron Phoenix Inverter Smart 1600-5000 VA Sine Wave Inverter

Description

The Victron Phoenix Inverter Smart range converts 12, 24 or 48 V battery power to 230 V AC sine wave output from 1600 to 5000 VA. Bluetooth is built in, so the unit is set up from a phone or tablet, and a VE.Direct port gives wired monitoring. It is a DC-to-AC inverter without a charger, intended for loads such as site cabins, telecom shelters, solar systems and vehicles where mains is not available.

A configurable inverter with dynamic cut-off and ECO mode

Victron lists a configurable low battery alarm, cut-off and restart levels, a dynamic cut-off whose level depends on the load, output voltage from 210 to 245 V, 50 or 60 Hz and an ECO mode with adjustable sense level. The full-bridge plus toroidal transformer topology is described as proven, and the inverter is protected against short circuit and overheating. High start-up power helps with loads such as LED power supplies, halogen lamps and power tools.

A programmable relay can signal alarms or start a generator. Remote on-off is supported through a two-pole connector or the optional Inverter Control panel. For automatic switching to another AC source Victron recommends its Filax transfer switch (under 20 ms) or a MultiPlus with built-in transfer switch.

Sizing and installation notes

Size on the continuous watt figure at your ambient temperature rather than on VA: a 5000 VA unit gives 4000 W at 25 degrees C but 2800 W at 65 degrees C. Use short, thick battery cables and a fuse sized for the battery side. These inverters cannot be paralleled; where more power is needed, choose a model from the Phoenix Inverter range with VE.Bus or a larger inverter. Phoenix Inverter Smart sizes

Rating Continuous at 25 degrees C Peak Battery voltages
1600 VA 1300 W 3000 W 12, 24, 48 V
2000 VA 1600 W 4000 W 12, 24, 48 V
3000 VA 2400 W 6000 W 12, 24, 48 V
5000 VA 4000 W 10000 W 24, 48 V

Installing a Phoenix Inverter Smart on a battery bank

Mount the inverter vertically on a solid, non-combustible wall close to the battery, so the DC cables stay as short as practical. The DC side carries far higher current than the AC side, so cable cross-section, lug crimping and tightening of the M8 battery bolts deserve the most attention during installation. Fit the battery fuse near the battery positive terminal, check polarity before closing it, and keep the ventilation openings of the steel housing clear of walls, shelves and stored equipment. The IP21 enclosure is meant for indoor or sheltered locations, not for open exposure to rain or wash-down.

On the AC side, the output should feed a distribution board with its own protective devices and earthing arrangement designed by a qualified electrician for the site. Because these units cannot run in parallel or in three-phase configuration, each inverter should supply its own circuit rather than being tied to another inverter output.

Setting up the inverter with VictronConnect

Commissioning is done over Bluetooth with the VictronConnect app. Typical steps are setting the output voltage and frequency for the connected loads, adjusting the low battery alarm, cut-off and restart levels to the battery chemistry and the battery supplier's recommendations, and deciding whether ECO mode suits the load pattern. ECO mode is useful where the inverter waits for long periods with no load, but small standby loads such as chargers or control electronics may not be detected reliably, so test it with the real equipment connected. The programmable relay can then be assigned to an alarm or generator start function and checked before handover.

Checks when choosing a model

  • System battery voltage: the 5000 VA size is listed only for 24 V and 48 V.
  • Continuous load in watts at the real ambient temperature of the room or enclosure.
  • Starting surge of motors, compressors or pumps compared with the peak power of the model.
  • Whether an automatic changeover to mains or a generator is needed, which this inverter does not provide by itself.

Heat, dust and humidity in Omani installations

The derating table on this page shows why ambient temperature matters so much in Oman and the wider GCC: a telecom shelter, container cabin or vehicle compartment in summer can be far hotter than the outdoor shade temperature. Provide ventilation or air conditioning for the room where the inverter is installed, avoid mounting it directly above battery banks or other heat sources, and leave space around the housing for the fan-assisted airflow. Fine desert dust collects on fan inlets and heat sink fins, so include visual inspection and gentle cleaning with the power isolated in the site maintenance routine. In coastal sites with salty, humid air, check the battery terminals and AC screw connections for corrosion and retighten them during scheduled visits. The Bluetooth and VE.Direct monitoring can be used to review alarms and operating history after hot periods, which helps to catch overload or high-temperature events before they become failures.
