Introducing LongTeng EM13K

LongTeng EM13K closes the submerged arc wire pages of the LongTeng welding materials catalogue and is the only grade that has a page to itself. The printed designation is AWS EM13K, the diameters are 2.5, 3.2, 4.0 and 5.0 mm, and the listed flux is the sintered type SJ101. Compared with the EM12 and EM12K entries, this grade shows a noticeably higher silicon level and a higher strength window, with tensile strength printed as a range from 490 to 670 MPa.

Decoding the EM13K Name

General class information: in the AWS A5.17 system, E marks an electrode, M a medium manganese level, 13 a nominal carbon content of about 0.13 percent, and K a silicon-killed wire. A silicon-killed wire carries enough silicon to deoxidise the weld pool strongly, which helps it tolerate mill scale and light surface oxide on plate and gives a smooth, well-wetted bead. The printed silicon figure of 0.67 percent for this grade is consistent with that idea. These notes explain how the class name is read and do not add any guarantee from LongTeng.

Higher Strength Window

The mechanical row for LongTeng EM13K is the strongest among the plain carbon wires on pages 22 to 24 of the catalogue. Minimum yield strength is printed as 390 MPa, minimum elongation as 18 percent and minimum impact energy as 27 J at minus 20 degrees Celsius. The elongation floor is lower than the 22 percent shown for the neighbouring grades, which is a normal trade for higher strength: the weld metal is stronger but slightly less ductile. Designers should keep that balance in mind when comparing wires for a joint that must absorb strain.

The application text printed beside this entry repeats a 420 MPa plate class that does not sit well with a 490 to 670 MPa weld metal range, so Seven Star LLC does not quote that statement. Chemistry as Printed

The catalogue analysis lists carbon at 0.089 percent, manganese at 0.98 percent, silicon at 0.67 percent, sulphur at 0.023 percent, nickel at 0.034 percent, chromium at 0.015 percent and copper at 0.110 percent. The phosphorus figure on the page is left out of this summary because it needs confirmation. The test certificate for the lot, which we can request, is the right document to read for a complete and verified analysis of LongTeng EM13K.

Practical Notes for Using LongTeng EM13K

The flux and wire form a system. SJ101 is a sintered flux, and as general practice sintered fluxes are kept in sealed packaging, redried before use and stored warm if the workshop is humid, which is common in coastal Oman. Wire should be loaded from sealed coils or drums with a clean feed path and a dry contact tip. For LongTeng EM13K, heavy diameters of 4.0 and 5.0 mm are suited to thick joints and high deposition, while 2.5 and 3.2 mm give finer control on moderate sections.

• Qualify the wire and flux on your own plate with your own heat input.
• Watch interpass temperature on thicker sections, since higher strength weld metal is more sensitive to cooling rate.
• Check the diameter marked on the pack against the one on the order.
• Keep records of wire lot and flux lot for each weld seam.
