Schneider Electric ATV12HU15M3 Altivar 12 1.5 kW 200-240 V Drive

Description

ATV12HU15M3 a small Altivar 12 drive for simple machines

The ATV12HU15M3 is a Schneider Electric product listed in the datasheet as: variable speed drive, Altivar 12, 1.5kW, 2hp, 200 to 240V, 3 phases, with heat sink. The Altivar 12 is Schneider Electric’s entry-level drive for simple machines, and this heat-sink version covers 1.5 kW (2 hp) on a 200 to 240 V supply. It suits single motors that need smooth speed control without the cost of a full machine drive: small pumps, fans, mixers and light conveyors. Seven Star LLC supplies the ATV12HU15M3 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier based in Muscat.

Decoding the reference: ATV12 is the Altivar 12 family, HU15 stands for the 1.5 kW size on the heat-sink version, and M3 marks the 200 to 240 V class. The datasheet adds that this unit has no EMC filter, so a customer who has to meet emission limits must plan an external filter.

Ratings, I/O and control on the ATV12HU15M3

Rated motor power: 1.5 kW. Nominal output current: 7.5 A. Supply voltage: 200 to 240 V (tolerance -15 % / +10 %). Network frequency: 50-60 Hz. Supply frequency: 50/60 Hz ± 5 %. Motor power ratings: 1.5 kW. Discrete inputs: 4. Discrete outputs: 2. Analogue inputs: 1. Analogue outputs: 1. Communication protocols: Modbus.

The control section is simple on purpose. There are four discrete inputs, two discrete outputs, one analogue input, one analogue output and one relay output, which is enough for start, stop, a speed reference and a fault contact. The output frequency reaches 400 Hz and the speed range is quoted as 1 to 20.

Control profiles are the quadratic voltage/frequency ratio, the standard V/f law and sensorless flux vector control, so the same unit can run a fan on a quadratic curve or a constant-torque machine in vector mode. The datasheet lists transient overtorque of 150 to 170 percent of nominal motor torque depending on the drive rating and motor type.

Where the ATV12HU15M3 fits among Altivar drives

Within the small-drive range the ATV12 sits below the ATV312 and ATV320, which add more I/O, more fieldbus choice and a wider speed range. For a single machine that only needs Modbus on an RJ45 port and a straightforward set-up, the ATV12HU15M3 is the economical choice; for a line of machines that must be networked on CANopen, a larger family member is safer.

Because the supply is 200 to 240 V, the drive is meant for single or three-phase systems at that level and not for 400 V networks. In the GCC a 230 V supply is common in small workshops and in packaged equipment shipped from Asia, which is where this reference is most often asked for.

Selection checklist for the ATV12HU15M3

  • Motor: 1.5 kW / 2 hp, matched to the motor nameplate current (the drive gives 7.5 A nominal output).
  • Supply: 200 to 240 V, 50/60 Hz; the drive does not accept 400 V.
  • EMC: no internal filter on this version, so add one if the site requires it.
  • Control: confirm that four inputs and one analogue input are enough for the machine.
  • Braking: the datasheet shows no integrated brake chopper, so high-inertia loads need a different drive or a resistor-capable model.
  • Spares: confirm the exact suffix, since the same family has filtered and unfiltered versions.

Mounting, wiring and set-up of the ATV12HU15M3

Mount the drive upright on a flat plate with free space above and below for airflow, and keep the motor cable away from signal wiring. Use a shielded cable for the motor and terminate the screen properly, particularly because this version has no filter to help with emissions.

Enter the motor nameplate data, set acceleration and deceleration ramps (the datasheet shows linear ramps up to 999.9 s) and choose the control profile. If the drive is replacing an older unit, save the old parameters first and compare the Modbus register map before connecting to a PLC.

Typical applications of the ATV12HU15M3 in Oman and the GCC

In Oman and the GCC the Altivar 12 is commonly met on small water-treatment pumps, ventilation fans, mixers and light conveyors in workshops and packaged skids. Ambient heat is the main issue: derate when the cabinet exceeds the temperature in the datasheet and keep cooling slots free of fine dust.

Dimensions, environment and approvals of the ATV12HU15M3

About brand

Schneider Electric is the French group for energy management and industrial automation: low and medium voltage switchgear and circuit breakers, motor control, drives, PLCs, power monitoring, UPS systems and building management. Its history goes back to 1836, when the brothers Adolphe and Eugène Schneider took over the iron and steel works at Le Creusot in Burgundy. Over the 20th century the company left steel and heavy engineering and became an electrical group through acquisitions such as Merlin Gerin, Télémécanique, Square D and Modicon. Its head office is in Rueil-Malmaison near Paris, and its shares are listed on Euronext Paris.

Choosing Schneider Electric breakers and motor control

Circuit breakers are chosen by current and breaking capacity. Acti9 miniature circuit breakers (iC60, C120) protect final circuits up to 125 A. ComPacT NSX molded case breakers cover about 16 to 630 A, and the letter after the frame size sets the breaking capacity: B, F, N, H, S, L from lowest to highest. MasterPacT air circuit breakers are used as main incomers on large switchboards. For motors, a TeSys contactor with an LRD overload relay or a GV2 motor circuit breaker suits direct starting, an Altistart soft starter reduces starting current, and an Altivar drive controls speed. The breaking capacity must always be at least the prospective short-circuit current at the point of installation.
