Rittal Blue e+ Wall-Mounted Enclosure Cooling Units

Description

Overview

The Rittal Blue e+ series is Rittal’s range of energy-efficient cooling units for control and switchgear enclosures. It combines an active refrigerant circuit with speed-regulated components and an integral heat pipe for passive cooling, and Rittal states that this hybrid principle saves 75 percent of the energy on average. The wall-mounted units in the Rittal brochure and data sheets cover output categories from 1.6 kW up to 5.5 kW, and the newer Blue e+ S line extends the family downward with 300 to 1,000 W units.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Rittal Blue e+ to power stations, water and desalination plants, oil and gas facilities and industrial contractors in the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. In a region where enclosure temperatures are driven by high ambient heat, our team in Muscat sizes the cooling output against the heat load and site conditions and quotes the unit together with the enclosure it will serve.

Operating Principle of the Rittal Blue e+

A conventional cooling unit switches a fixed-speed compressor on and off against a thermostat. The Rittal Blue e+ instead regulates the speed of the compressor and fans so that cooling follows the actual heat load, and the active circuit is supported by a patented heat pipe. When the ambient temperature falls below the enclosure setpoint, the heat pipe removes heat passively, and the compressor cuts in only when passive cooling is no longer sufficient. The active circuit operates from 3 °C to 60 °C, and the heat pipe works from −20 °C to 45 °C.

The e+ controller, factory set to +35 °C, keeps a constant temperature inside the enclosure with three control modes, and the setting range is 20 °C to 50 °C. Rittal quotes the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) as well as the standard energy efficiency ratio (EER), because the SEER reflects temperature changes through the year rather than a single test point. For the SK 3188.940 data sheet the EER is 3.08 and the SEER is 6.5.

Engineering Design of the Rittal Blue e+

The Rittal Blue e+ wall-mounted units are available in sheet steel (RAL 7035) and stainless steel (RAL 9007) versions. The SK 3188.940 is a sheet steel unit measuring 450 x 1,600 x 393 mm, with a mounting cut-out of 433 x 1,579 mm and a net weight of 72.4 kg. Its condenser has a hydrophobic RiNano coating, condensate is evaporated electrically inside the unit, and it is delivered fully wired with a plug-in terminal strip. Air throughput is 2,300 m³/h on both the external and internal circuits, and the internal circuit is IP 55 with UL Type 12 and Type 3R ratings.

Operation is through an industrial-grade touch display with multilingual plain-text messages. Device analysis is possible through the RiDiag software over USB, an Ethernet interface supports remote monitoring, and a near field communication interface works with the Blue e+ app. An optional IoT interface (model 3124.300) connects the unit to monitoring and energy management systems, and LED optical fibres show non-critical (yellow) or serious (red) errors even from a distance.

Key Features of the Rittal Blue e+

The Rittal documentation highlights these features of the Rittal Blue e+ units.

  • Average energy savings of 75 percent through speed-regulated components and heat pipe technology.
  • Multi-voltage operation from 110 to 240 V single-phase or 380 to 480 V three-phase at 50 or 60 Hz on most models, with cULus, EAC and TUV Nord GS approvals.
  • Component-friendly cooling that extends the service life of the electronics inside the enclosure and of the unit itself.
  • A condenser with hydrophobic coating and integral electric condensate evaporation.
  • One version for external mounting, partial internal mounting and full internal mounting using one cut-out in the same output category.
  • Tool-less replacement of filter mats and a transport handle with eyebolts for easier installation.
  • Remote monitoring through Ethernet and an optional IoT interface, plus analysis with RiDiag and a Scan and Service app.
  • Refrigerant R-513A with a global warming potential of 631 in the SK 3188.940, and an operating range from −20 °C to +60 °C.

Industrial Applications

Enclosure cooling units are used wherever electronics must be protected from heat in sealed cabinets: motor control centres, variable frequency drive panels, PLC and DCS cabinets, telecom shelters and packaged skids. In Oman the Rittal Blue e+ addresses summer ambient temperatures in outdoor and semi-outdoor installations at power plants, desalination units, pump stations and gas processing sites, where an air conditioner that follows the load saves running cost over a long service life.

Rittal notes that the SK 3188.940 is only suitable for use in semi-outdoor areas, so installations in direct weather exposure must be reviewed. Seven Star LLC supplies the Rittal Blue e+ with engineering support in Muscat, and can quote matching enclosures, filter mats and the IoT interface.

About brand
Control panels in most process plants sit inside a Rittal enclosure or one built to the same pattern. Rittal, founded in 1961 and based in Herborn, Germany, makes enclosures, enclosure climate control and power distribution components. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists Rittal enclosures and cooling units for panel builders and maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC, including the TS 8 system, Blue e+ cooling units and a KEL Ex stainless steel enclosure.

Rittal products listed on our site

The TS 8 is the free-standing, bayable enclosure system found in a very large number of existing panels. Blue e+ wall-mounted cooling units remove heat from closed enclosures. The KEL 9404.600 is a stainless steel Ex enclosure, listed at 380 x 600 x 210 mm, for terminal and junction duties in hazardous areas.

Ordering Rittal enclosures and cooling units: what we need

Rittal parts are ordered by a seven-digit model number such as 9404.600. Send that number, or the width, height and depth, material, protection category and door arrangement. For cooling units add the required cooling output, the rated voltage and the mounting cut-out of the unit being replaced. For Ex enclosures, state the zone and the marking required.
