Pfannenberg PF 42500 24V IP54 DC Filterfan, 125 m3/h
Description
PF 42500 24V IP54 filterfan: decoded article 11642801055
The PF 42500 24V IP54 is a installation size 4 filterfan with a 24 V DC fan from Pfannenberg, intended to move cabinet-external air through a filter mat and into an electrical enclosure. It is built into a door or side panel cut-out and removes heat by exchanging the warm enclosure air for cooler ambient air, so it only works when the surrounding air is cooler than the maximum acceptable temperature inside the cabinet.
The model name decodes as follows: PF is the filterfan family, 42500 identifies installation size 4 (the cut-out and airflow class), 24 V DC is the supply voltage and IP54 is the protection class of the filterfan face. The full order number for this exact variant is 11642801055. What sets this unit apart is the DC fan: 4.7 W of consumption for 125 m³/h of free airflow, which is very economical for a size-4 unit.

How the PF 42500 24V filterfan works
Many process and automation cabinets already carry a 24 V DC rail, and powering the fan from it avoids a mains connection and an extra circuit breaker in the door. The ball bearing and the continuous duty cycle mean it can be left running for years under normal conditions.
In the PF 42500 24V IP54, air enters through the louvred front cover, passes through the filter mat and is pushed into the enclosure by a single axial fan. Warm air leaves the cabinet through a second opening, usually fitted with a matching exhaust filter, so that dust cannot enter through the outlet either. The louvres are shaped to give a high airflow for the size of the housing and to keep splash water and falling debris away from the filter mat.
Because the PF 42500 24V IP54 only moves air, the achievable cooling depends on the temperature difference between the inside and the outside of the enclosure and on the pressure drop of the filters and any rainhood. A thermostat is normally used to switch the fan on at a set cabinet temperature, which saves power and extends filter life.
Fit in the system and related Pfannenberg parts
It shares its mounting cut-out of 223 mm x 223 mm with the AC sibling PF 42500 230V and with earlier size-4 filterfans, so replacement of an old unit does not require re-cutting the door.
The same family covers installation sizes 1 to 6, with sibling models such as PF 11000, PF 22000, PF 32000, PF 42500, PF 43000, PF 65000 and the slim PF 67000 SL. The exhaust counterpart carries the PFA prefix and shares the cut-out, so a filterfan and an exhaust filter of the same size can be combined for forced circulation.

Selection and ordering checklist for the PF 42500 24V IP54
Before ordering the PF 42500 24V IP54, confirm that the following points are settled so the correct variant is quoted:
- Cabinet heat load in watts and the permitted internal temperature
- Highest outdoor or room air temperature; a filterfan only cools when ambient is below the enclosure limit
- Supply: 24 V DC; other voltages carry other article numbers
- Cut-out of 223 mm x 223 mm and the installation depth behind the panel
- Availability of a regulated 24 V DC supply with enough current margin
When a cabinet is supplied from a regulated 24 V DC rail, ask for the supply to be sized so that fan inrush and the combined load of the units on the door stay inside the power supply rating.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the PF 42500 24V IP54
Installing the PF 42500 24V IP54 uses a cut-out in the cabinet wall and the tool-free four-corner fastening of the Pfannenberg filterfan. A poured foam seal on the frame is pressed against the panel, which keeps the stated protection class intact without a separate gasket. Mount the fan so that the airflow is from outside to inside and place the exhaust outlet as far from the inlet as practical, ideally at the opposite side and higher up, so warm air rises out of the enclosure.
Connect the PF 42500 24V IP54 supply with the fuse stated in the data table and protect the circuit as described in the manual. For commissioning, run the fan for several minutes and confirm direction of air movement at the louvres, then check the enclosure temperature under real load.
- Inspect the filter mat at each service visit and replace it when visibly loaded; spare mats come in packs of five
- Verify that the exhaust opening is clear and that cables do not obstruct the louvres
- Check the DC supply voltage at the fan terminals when commissioning, since voltage drop on long wiring reduces speed
Compared with the 230 V AC unit of the same size the DC fan draws far less power. That matters on solar-powered remote sites, battery-backed telemetry cabinets and wellhead control panels where every watt counts.
Typical applications in Oman and the GCC
Typical uses are RTU panels, PLC and I/O cabinets, small drives rooms and analyser shelters on oil and gas and water-treatment sites.
Across the region, filterfans are used on control panels in oil and gas facilities, power stations and substations, desalination plants and petrochemical sites, where cabinets sit in electrical rooms or outdoor kiosks. Ambient temperatures above +40 °C for much of the year, fine sand and high humidity near the coast mean that the filter mat class, the protection class and the thermal margin should be checked rather than assumed. Where outdoor ambient air can approach the allowed enclosure temperature, a cooling unit or heat exchanger is the better choice than a filterfan.

About brand
Pfannenberg is the German maker of thermal management and signalling products for electrical enclosures and industry: filter fans, cooling units, air-to-water heat exchangers, chillers, heaters, sirens and beacons. Otto Pfannenberg, an electrical engineer, founded the company in Hamburg in 1954, and in 1958 he invented the filter fan to stop components in control cabinets from overheating. Pfannenberg is still family-owned and headquartered in Hamburg.

FAQ
Questions about the Pfannenberg PF 42500 24V IP54 DC Filterfan, 125 m3/h
Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.
01What is special about the PF 42500 24V IP54?
It uses a 24 V DC fan with only 4.7 W power consumption. It can run directly from the control-cabinet DC rail and still offers 125 m³/h of free airflow.
02What is the filtered airflow?
With an exhaust filter fitted the page gives 93 m³/h. Use this value when sizing the cabinet heat removal.
03What cut-out size does it need?
The cut-out is 223 mm x 223 mm; the outer housing is 252 mm x 252 mm and 103 mm deep with 97 mm installation depth.
04Is there a version with IP55?
Yes, the family has IP55 versions with a fluted filter and UV-resistant cover, for example article 11642803055 for 24 V DC.
05Does it need a thermostat?
Not by design, but a thermostat (article 17121000000) is commonly added so the fan runs only when the enclosure is warm, which extends the life of the filter mat.
