TDK B84143B0600S080 600 A 3-Line EMC Filter for Converters

Description

A 600 A line filter for large converters and drive cabinets

The TDK B84143B0600S080 is a three-line EMC power line filter with busbar terminals, rated 600 A at 40 C for a 300/520 V AC supply. It sits between a three-phase supply and a frequency converter or power supply and attenuates high-frequency noise conducted back into the network. The S080 suffix is the standard-application type; the same current rating is also offered as B84143B0600S081 for higher voltages (440/760 V AC) and as B84143K0600S081 without Y capacitors for very low leakage current.

The filter weighs about 7.8 kg in a metal case, and TDK lists frequency converters for motor drives, photovoltaics, wind farms and power supplies as its typical applications.

Choosing between S080, S081 and the K type

Use S080 where the supply is 400/230 V class and the drive is a standard converter. S081 is the choice for higher supply voltages, while the K type drops the Y capacitors so that leakage current becomes very low, which matters on residual-current-protected feeders. All three types share the current ladder of 180, 250, 320, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1250 and 1600 A, so a panel can be re-sized to a neighbouring rating.

Within the series the 600 A step weighs 7.8 kg against 7.5 kg for the 400 A step, and its 50 kA peak withstand rating matches the 320 A and 400 A types, while 800 A and above are rated 75 kA. Typical resistance falls from 0.110 mOhm at 180 A to 0.043 mOhm at 600 A and 0.022 mOhm at 1250 A.

  • The 600 A S080 type carries approval marks in both table columns, unlike the 800 A S080 type, which has none printed.
  • Rated current is referred to 40 C. Above that, consult the derating instructions in the TDK data book, as the datasheet states.
  • The 50 kA peak withstand rating is limited by the I2t characteristic of the upstream fuse, so check the fuse you use.

Installation and earthing

The datasheet’s warnings are direct: only qualified electricians should install and maintain the filter, and the protective earth connection must be made first and removed last. The filter holds a charge, so dangerous voltage can remain at the terminals for more than five minutes after switch-off. For leakage currents above 3.5 mA the PE conductor must be fixed and secured against disconnection, with KU 4.5 up to 10 mA and KU 6 above 10 mA, which is relevant here because this code has 14 mA leakage. Protect the filter against overload with an overcurrent device, avoid resonance circuits, and remember the case can stay hot after switch-off. Busbar connection details are in the datasheet section on mechanical properties.

Where it is used in the Gulf

A 600 A filter is a panel-level component: large VFD lineups for cooling water pumps, gas compression and desalination high-pressure pumps, grid-connected solar inverters and similar converters where the utility or plant standard limits conducted emissions. The 40 C rating is worth checking against rear-of-panel temperatures in a hot switchroom. See the electrical and power category for other filters and reactors.

Selection and installation notes

An EMC filter or reactor is selected from the rated current at the actual ambient temperature, the supply voltage and the drive or load it serves. Fit it as close as possible to the drive input, keep the cable between filter and drive short, bond the housing to the panel back plate with a clean metal contact, separate input and output cables, and check the leakage current against the protective earth requirements of the installation.
