Scinor SMT600-S60 Submerged Ultrafiltration Module
Overview
The Scinor SMT600-S60 is a submerged hollow-fibre ultrafiltration module with 60 m² (646 ft²) of effective membrane area, built with Scinor’s Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) PVDF membrane. It belongs to the SMT600 series, which Scinor positions for potable water, wastewater, desalination pretreatment and industrial water, and it is designed to retrofit installations originally supplied by other major membrane vendors. That retrofit capability matters to plant owners: when an existing submerged UF train reaches the end of its membrane life, the Scinor SMT600-S60 gives them a choice of replacement modules instead of being tied to a single original supplier.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Scinor SMT600-S60 to water utilities, desalination operators, EPC contractors and industrial water treatment users in the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. As a trusted supplier with engineering support in Muscat, we help project teams compare the module dimensions and port arrangement with their existing tanks and frames, and we coordinate submittals such as the module datasheet and certification references.
Operating Principle of the Scinor SMT600-S60
In a submerged ultrafiltration system the modules hang in an open tank of feed water. The Scinor SMT600-S60 operates under vacuum during filtration: a permeate pump draws water from outside the hollow fibres to the inside, so particles, suspended solids, bacteria and protozoa larger than the 0.1 µm nominal pore size stay in the tank while clean filtrate flows to the permeate header. The fibres have an inner diameter of 0.6 mm and an outer diameter of 1.1 mm, and the PVDF material is hydrophilic, which helps water pass through the membrane wall at low transmembrane pressure and allows the series to accept a wide range of feed waters, including very dirty ones.
Solids accumulate on the outer fibre surface during filtration, so stable capacity is maintained by regular backwashing combined with air scouring. During backwash, filtrate is pushed back through the fibres at 30 to 70 lmh while air at 2.3 to 7.0 scfm per module agitates the fibres and lifts the cake into the tank for removal. Chemical cleaning is needed only infrequently. Because the membrane tolerates more than 5000 mg/L sodium hypochlorite and a cleaning pH range of 1 to 13, operators can use strong cleaning chemistry to recover permeability after fouling events.
Engineering Design of the Scinor SMT600-S60
The Scinor SMT600-S60 module has a diameter of 180 mm and a length of 1654 mm, with a DN50 port. Its head and housing components are PVC and the fibres are potted in polyurethane. Integrated air and hydraulic piping keeps the open, immersed design compact, and the high hollow-fibre packing density gives a small footprint for a given plant capacity. Modules are assembled on racks that connect to common permeate and air headers, so a train can be built up to the required flow by adding modules.
The TIPS manufacturing process produces a PVDF fibre with high mechanical strength and durability, which the manufacturer links to a low fibre breakage rate and long operational life. Normal operating conditions are a transmembrane pressure of up to 12 psi, a maximum TMP of 13 psi, a maximum backwash pressure of 17.5 psi, water temperature of 1 to 40 °C and a continuous pH range of 1 to 11. The filtrate target is turbidity of 0.1 NTU or below and a silt density index of 3 or below, which suits downstream reverse osmosis.
Key Features
The Scinor SMT600-S60 offers the following benefits to plant designers and operators:
- Tight 0.1 µm nominal pore size distribution for consistent filtrate quality.
- Log removal ratings of more than 6.19 log for Cryptosporidium and more than 3.63 log for virus.
- Filtrate turbidity of 0.1 NTU or below and SDI of 3 or below for RO pretreatment.
- Hydrophilic TIPS PVDF fibres with high permeability and high flux on all water sources.
- Tolerance to more than 5000 mg/L sodium hypochlorite and a CIP pH range of 1 to 13.
- Low energy and chemical consumption and low requirements for pretreatment.
- Certification to NSF/ANSI 419 and NSF/ANSI 61 for drinking water applications.
- Retrofit compatibility with installations from other major membrane suppliers.
Industrial Applications
The Scinor SMT600-S60 is applied wherever a submerged UF train must produce low-turbidity, pathogen-free water: surface and groundwater treatment for drinking water, tertiary filtration of treated municipal wastewater for reuse and irrigation, pretreatment of seawater or brackish water ahead of reverse osmosis, and industrial process and cooling water. Its open tank arrangement handles high-solids feed better than pressurised modules, and its low SDI filtrate protects RO membranes from particulate fouling, extending their cleaning interval.
In Oman, typical uses for the Scinor SMT600-S60 include desalination pretreatment at coastal plants, treated sewage effluent reuse schemes for landscape irrigation around Muscat, produced water and process water polishing at oil and gas facilities, and industrial water systems in the Sohar, Duqm and Salalah zones. Seven Star LLC supports these projects as a trusted supplier with engineering support in Muscat. Plants already operating pressurised trains can compare the Scinor SMT600-P80 and Scinor SMT600-P40 pressurized modules, while filtrate turbidity can be monitored with the JUMO ecoLine NTU turbidity sensor.

Three module types are on this page. The SMT600-P40 and SMT600-P80 are pressurized ultrafiltration modules that sit in a rack and are fed by a pump. The SMT600-S60 is a submerged module that hangs in an open tank and works under suction. The letter after SMT600 tells you the configuration, so P and S modules are not interchangeable on the same skid.Where Scinor membranes are used
The manufacturer references projects in power generation, petrochemical and chemical plants, coal, steel and municipal water supply. Typical duties are pretreatment ahead of reverse osmosis, surface water clarification and wastewater reuse, which are common needs across the GCC.Ordering Scinor modules: what we need
