A high-capacity liquid/gas coalescer cartridge for wet gas streams

The Pall SepraSol Plus CS604LGH is a liquid/gas coalescer cartridge that removes liquids and solids from high-flow gas streams carrying high liquid loads. Pall states that the SepraSol Plus media can process several times more liquid per unit area than conventional media, which often removes the need for upstream bulk separation equipment such as mist eliminators and vane separators. The media is supplied in a large 6-inch (152.4 mm) diameter, 40-inch (1016 mm) long cartridge with 2.6 square metres of surface area.

Pall lists applications that match gas processing and power plants: protecting compressors and turbines, removing lube oil, water and compressor wear products from effluent gas, removing liquid aerosols upstream of amine sweetening and dehydration units to prevent foaming, protecting desiccant and catalyst beds, cleaning dirty fuel gas for low-NOx burners and fuel injection nozzles, and controlling injection well plugging during gas flooding.

Selecting and sizing the coalescer

Pall notes that coalescers often fail in the field because the liquid influent concentration is underestimated: the more liquid is charged to the coalescer, the more media area is needed, and overloading causes re-entrainment and downstream problems. Pall offers a proprietary sizing program for the inlet gas stream. Its comparison for natural gas with liquid condensate (4.25 MMSCMD, 51.7 barg) shows the treated SepraSol Plus pack needing far fewer cartridges and a smaller vessel than an untreated conventional pack as liquid loading rises from 50 to 2000 ppm by weight. Ultipleat High Flow is a large-diameter, coreless pleated cartridge built to carry a high flow per element, so a housing needs far fewer cartridges than a conventional design. The matching Ultipleat High Flow housings are the vessels these cartridges seal into. Profile Coreless elements are depth filters that slide over a reusable stainless steel core, which leaves only the filter media to dispose of at change-out. Medallion elements are liquid/liquid coalescers, cataloged by Pall as the Medallion Series Liquid/Liquid Coalescers: they merge a fine dispersion of one liquid in another, such as water in a hydrocarbon, into drops large enough to settle out. Pall's Medallion HP line is a separate family of liquid/gas coalescers.
