A hydrophobic and coalescing pre-filter for turbines and engines

The Camfil CamClose Compact 592x592x96-T5 is a plastic-framed pre-filter for gas turbines, large industrial air compressors, diesel and gas engines, generators and enclosures, and wind turbines, as listed by Camfil. It can be used as a hydrophobic or coalescing air filter stage and is described as suitable for most areas including wet and coastal ones.

That last point matters for Oman and the wider Gulf, where generator and turbine intakes meet salt-laden humid air. The T5 grade is the mid-efficiency option in the three printed grades, rated T5 under ISO 29461, M5 under EN 779 and ePM10 65% under ISO 16890.

Technical specification

The datasheet gives media area and weight only on the T2 line (2.3 m2 and 2.5 kg); no figures are printed for the T5, so ask for them if your enclosure design depends on weight.

T2, T5 or T6

Moving from T2 to T5 roughly doubles the initial resistance (60 to 125 Pa, derived), and T6 adds a further 20 Pa. The 450 Pa recommended final value is the same for the pre-filter family, so the usable pressure window is widest on the T2 and narrowest on the T6.

Where each grade fits and what to specify

For a gas turbine or engine intake, the pre-filter stage protects the main filter from rain, fog and salt carry-over, which is the reason the sheet stresses the hydrophobic or coalescing role. A higher grade such as T5 captures more fine dust than T2 but at about twice the resistance, so check intake pressure loss limits with the turbine or engine supplier.

To order, quote the exact string CamClose Compact – 592x592x96-T5 with the number of elements per bank, the filter bank frame or close-coupling arrangement, and the final filter model the CamClose will clip to. Confirm the intake temperature limit, as it is not printed on the sheet.

This is a pre-filter, not a final filter, and the sheet makes no claim for sulphur or other gaseous removal.

Practical notes for Gulf power and energy sites

Coastal power plants, desalination plants and offshore-support sites often fit multiple stages on turbine and generator intakes. A close-coupled pre-filter of this kind is placed ahead of the main filter to take rain, mist and dust. This is the reason Camfil lists coastal and wet areas among the suitable locations.

Do not treat a pre-filter rating as proof of protection for the turbine: the final protection depends on the main filter stage that the engine maker specifies.

Fitting and selection notes

Because the frame is built for close-coupling, you can clip the CamClose onto a final filter and avoid a separate holding frame. For a separate bank, use a suitable frame. Where intake air carries fog or rain, the hydrophobic and coalescing function is the reason to specify this series, rather than a standard dry pre-filter.

Fitting and replacement notes

Mount the CamClose Compact in the pre-filter frame of the turbine, compressor or engine intake according to the airflow direction, and make sure the gasketing seals fully. The coalescing stage is intended to capture moisture droplets, so provide a drain path where the installation requires one. Check pressure drop regularly in coastal or humid sites, as salt and moisture load the filter quickly.
