Pall Medallion Liquid/Liquid Coalescer Elements

Description

Overview

The Pall Medallion liquid/liquid coalescer is a coreless cartridge designed to separate two immiscible liquids that are present as a fine dispersion, for example water dispersed in a hydrocarbon product or hydrocarbon carried over in an aqueous stream. Pall describes the Medallion line as designed for the process industry, offering optimized performance and reduced operation and maintenance costs, and it handles applications with liquid loading of up to 20 percent by volume. In refineries and chemical plants, the Pall Medallion coalescer is installed in a dedicated vessel so that the dispersed phase merges into larger drops and drains to a sump.

Seven Star LLC supplies Pall Medallion liquid/liquid elements and compatible adapter hardware to refinery, petrochemical and gas processing operators in Oman and the GCC. Our Muscat team helps customers match the Pall part number on the existing element tag, confirm the media (nylon or PPS) and grade, and check that the operating temperature and differential pressure limits fit the service before the RFQ is issued.

Coalescing Principle

When a fine dispersion flows through the fibrous depth media of the Pall Medallion element, tiny droplets are captured on the fibres, merge with neighbouring droplets and grow. On leaving the media, the enlarged drops are heavy or buoyant enough to separate quickly under gravity in the settling zone of the vessel, so the heavier phase settles into the sump and the lighter phase leaves as clean product. The performance depends on the media, the fibre arrangement and the flow per element, which is why the Medallion media pack is arranged to deliver high liquid removal per unit area.

The data sheet reports up to 90 percent dispersed phase removal, based on tests with the LCS604NC coalescer, and inlet loading as high as 15 to 20 percent by volume can be tolerated. Because the Pall Medallion element has a large diameter, fewer elements are needed for a given flow rate and the vessel can be smaller than one built for bulk removal technologies, which Pall lists as reduced capital and installation cost, a smaller footprint and improved water removal over other bulk separation technologies.

Engineering Design of the Pall Medallion

The Pall Medallion liquid/liquid cartridge is built from polymeric melt-blown depth media in nylon or polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), supported by an adapter cage that is available in 304 or 316L stainless steel under part number ADLLHT2. The nominal element is 152.4 mm (6 inch) in diameter and 1016 mm (40 inch) long. The part number structure LCS is followed by the diameter code 6, the length code 04, the media code N for nylon or FPS for PPS, and a grade code B, C or D that selects fine, medium or coarse media.

A coreless design means the element has no internal metal core: the stainless steel adapter hardware is reusable and only the polymeric element is replaced. Pall highlights that the used element can be incinerated or crushed for landfill disposal, which lowers disposal cost. The recommended change-out differential pressure is 1.03 bard (15 psid), while the maximum operating differential pressure is 2.06 bard (30 psid). Maximum operating temperature in compatible aqueous and hydrocarbon fluids is 60 degC (140 degF) for nylon and 93.3 degC (200 degF) for PPS.

Key Features

The Pall Medallion liquid/liquid coalescer is selected for these working characteristics:

  • High liquid removal per unit area from a media pack tuned for liquid/liquid coalescing.
  • Up to 90 percent dispersed phase removal and tolerance of inlet liquid loading up to 15 to 20 percent by volume.
  • High-capacity large diameter element that needs fewer cartridges for a given flow rate.
  • Polymeric melt-blown depth media in nylon (grades B and C) or PPS (grades B and D).
  • Coreless construction with reusable stainless steel adapter cage in 304 or 316L.
  • A coarser pre-filter may be used upstream, which lowers operating and maintenance cost.
  • Recommended change-out at 1.03 bard (15 psid) differential pressure and maximum 2.06 bard (30 psid).
  • Maximum operating temperature of 60 degC for nylon and 93.3 degC for PPS in compatible fluids.

Industrial Applications

The data sheet lists a broad set of refinery and chemical duties for the Pall Medallion coalescer: final product dehazing, caustic treater feed, hydrotreater feed, slops reprocessing, salt drier protection, sour water stripper protection, post water wash drum service, hydrocarbon removal from amine, and alkylation unit feed and recycle isobutane. Each of these applications relies on keeping a second liquid phase out of a downstream unit that cannot tolerate it, whether that is a catalyst bed, a salt drier or a product tank with specification limits on free water.

In the Sultanate of Oman, comparable duties arise in the refining and petrochemical operations at Sohar and Duqm and in gas and condensate processing facilities in the interior, where reliable removal of water and hydrocarbon dispersions protects downstream equipment and product quality. Seven Star LLC can quote the Pall Medallion element together with compatible prefilter elements, and customers may compare it with the Parker 9000040001 coalescing filter element, the Spirax Sarco CS10 stainless steel clean steam separator or the mobile filtration system for water treatment when assessing separation options.

About brand
Filtration and separation of process fluids is the whole of Pall's business. The company was founded in 1946, and in oil and gas, refining, chemical and power plants its elements sit ahead of compressors, contactors, burners and injection wells. Seven Star LLC lists Pall Ultipleat High Flow cartridges and housings, Profile Coreless gas filter elements and Medallion coalescer elements, and supplies them to plants in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier.

Pall filter families listed here

Ultipleat High Flow is a large-diameter, coreless pleated cartridge built to carry a high flow per element, so a housing needs far fewer cartridges than a conventional design. The matching Ultipleat High Flow housings are the vessels these cartridges seal into. Profile Coreless elements are depth filters that slide over a reusable metal core, which leaves only the filter media to dispose of at change-out. Medallion elements are coalescers: they merge fine droplets into drops large enough to drain away.

Where Pall elements are used

Typical duties are particle removal from amine, glycol, condensate and water streams, black powder and fines removal from gas lines, and liquid removal ahead of compressors and molecular sieve beds.

Ordering Pall filter elements: what we need

Send the full Pall part number from the element end cap or the housing nameplate. If it cannot be read, give the housing model, element length and diameter, micron rating, seal material, the fluid and the operating temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Pall Medallion liquid/liquid coalescer remove?
It removes a finely dispersed second liquid phase, such as water from hydrocarbon streams or hydrocarbon from aqueous streams, by coalescing the droplets into larger drops that settle out. The data sheet reports up to 90 percent dispersed phase removal.
How much liquid loading can the Pall Medallion element handle?
Pall states that the Medallion liquid/liquid coalescer can be used in applications with liquid loading up to 20 percent by volume, and that inlet loading as high as 15 to 20 percent can be tolerated.
Which media should I choose, nylon or PPS?
Nylon elements are rated to 60 degC and PPS elements to 93.3 degC in compatible aqueous and hydrocarbon fluids. Chemical compatibility and temperature decide the media, and grade codes B, C and D select fine, medium or coarse pore structure.
What is the advantage of the coreless design?
The adapter cage stays in the vessel and can be reused, so only the polymeric element is replaced. Pall notes that used elements can be incinerated or crushed for landfill disposal, which reduces disposal cost.
Can Seven Star LLC supply Pall Medallion coalescers in Oman?
Seven Star LLC supplies Pall filtration products for Oman and GCC plants. Provide the existing element part number or the process data and the Muscat team will confirm the selection, availability and lead time.
