Pall Ultipleat High Flow Series Filter Cartridges

Description

Overview

The Pall Ultipleat High Flow filter is a large-diameter, coreless, single open-ended pleated cartridge with an inside-to-outside flow pattern. Its crescent-shaped pleat geometry, combined with a 152.4 mm (6 inch) diameter and a proprietary range of Pall filter media, lets plant designers use significantly fewer filters and smaller housings for high flow rate applications. Pall states that the Ultipleat High Flow design can mean up to 40 times fewer cartridges to change out and up to 50 percent smaller filter systems than conventional approaches.

In industrial water, process fluid and fuel treatment, the Pall Ultipleat High Flow format matters because the number of cartridges drives labour, downtime and disposal cost as much as the filter itself. Seven Star LLC supplies the Pall Ultipleat High Flow range to plants in Oman and the GCC, backed by regional stock coordination and engineering support in Muscat. We help customers decode HFU part numbers, select the medium and grade, confirm O-ring materials and check that the cartridge fits the existing housing.

Pleat Geometry and Flow Path

Flow through the cartridge is from the inside to the outside. Fluid enters the open end, passes through the pleated medium and leaves on the outside, so the solids stay trapped inside the element. Pall points out that this prevents contaminant from polluting the treated stream during cartridge change-out, because the dirty side is the interior of the cartridge that is lifted out of the housing. The crescent-shaped pleat form maximises the effective filtration area within the 6 inch envelope and keeps the pleats open for flow.

Because the Pall Ultipleat High Flow cartridge is rated absolute, performance is reproducible. The data sheet gives liquid removal ratings at 99.98 percent by particle count, using an adaptation of ISO 4572 modified to determine the micron size above which particles are quantitatively removed. Grades range from 1 micron (CAS010) through 2, 4.5, 6, 10 and 20 micron up to coarse 70 and 90 micron Profile grades. The coarse grades cannot be verified precisely with the modified ISO 4572 method, so their removal efficiency is determined by maximum spherical particle analysis, and one housing design serves both fine polishing and coarse protection.

Engineering Design of the Pall Ultipleat High Flow

Pall offers five media families for the Pall Ultipleat High Flow range in the Ultipleat format. HDC II medium is a high-area polypropylene structure; Profile medium in Ultipleat format is a pleated polypropylene depth structure; Ultipor GF is a resin-bonded glass fibre medium with polyester support; Ultipleat HT is a glass fibre medium with an aramid support for higher temperature; and Ultipleat CAS is a pleated polypropylene and polyether sulfone membrane composite. End caps are glass-filled polypropylene, glass-filled acetal or acetal depending on the medium, and each cartridge has a handle for easy replacement.

Pall Ultipleat High Flow cartridge length is selected through the HFU part number: code 620 is 20 inch (508 mm) with a suggested maximum water flow of 175 gpm (663 lpm), code 640 is 40 inch (1016 mm) at 350 gpm (1325 lpm), and codes 660 and 680 are 60 and 80 inch (1524 and 2032 mm) at 500 gpm (1900 lpm). Maximum differential pressure in the normal inside-to-outside direction is 3.44 bard at 82 degC (50 psid at 180 degF) for polypropylene and CAS media, and 3.44 bard at 121 degC (50 psid at 250 degF) for glass fibre and HT media. O-ring materials are nitrile, ethylene propylene, silicone or fluoroelastomer, with U-cup seals for some grades.

Key Features

The Pall Ultipleat High Flow cartridge delivers these advantages to process engineers and maintenance teams:

  • Coreless large-diameter cartridge of synthetic construction that minimises waste disposal.
  • High flow rate per cartridge, up to 1900 lpm (500 gpm), with up to 40 times fewer cartridges to change out.
  • Systems that can be up to 50 percent smaller than conventional designs.
  • Available in 20, 40, 60 and 80 inch lengths and a wide variety of filter grades from 1 to 90 micron.
  • Absolute-rated filter medium for reproducible performance.
  • Proprietary crescent-shaped pleat geometry for high filtration area.
  • Inside-to-outside flow that keeps captured contaminant inside the element during change-out.
  • Handle for easy cartridge replacement and a choice of nitrile, EPR, silicone or fluoroelastomer seals.

Industrial Applications

The Pall Ultipleat High Flow cartridge is commonly specified for large-volume liquid filtration duties such as seawater and brackish water prefiltration upstream of reverse osmosis, cooling and process water, produced water and injection water polishing, amine and glycol solution protection, fuel and condensate filtration, and general chemical processing. In the wet hydrocarbon applications referenced in the data sheet, the maximum temperature is 60 degC for glass fibre medium and 100 degC for HT medium, so medium and temperature must be matched to the fluid.

Desalination and power plants on the Batinah coast, refineries and terminals at Sohar and Duqm, and oil field water handling facilities in the interior can all reduce footprint and change-out labour with high-flow cartridges. Seven Star LLC can quote the Pall Ultipleat High Flow cartridge and compatible housings, and customers can also review related items such as the mobile filtration system for water treatment, the Scinor SMT600-P40 pressurized ultrafiltration module and the Bosch Rexroth R928006678 hydraulic filter element.

About brand
Pall is a global filtration, separation and purification specialist, part of Danaher, whose industrial range covers coalescers, depth and pleated filter elements, and large-flow filter housings for fuels and chemicals, power generation, gas processing and water applications. Coreless Profile and Ultipleat High Flow cartridges cut element counts and waste on gas and liquid duties, while Medallion coalescers protect compressors, amine and glycol contactors and molecular sieve beds from liquid carry-over in oil and gas processing. Seven Star LLC supplies Pall filtration products with regional stock and engineering support in Muscat, helping plants across Oman and the GCC protect downstream equipment, stabilise separation performance and extend element life between change-outs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cartridges does a Pall Ultipleat High Flow system need?
Pall states that the 6 inch diameter cartridge can handle up to 1900 lpm (500 gpm), which may mean up to 40 times fewer cartridges to change out and a filter system up to 50 percent smaller than conventional cartridge designs.
Which media options are available?
The cartridges are offered in HDC II polypropylene, Profile polypropylene depth, Ultipor GF glass fibre, Ultipleat HT glass fibre with aramid support and Ultipleat CAS membrane composite media, with absolute ratings from 1 to 90 micron depending on grade.
What temperature and pressure limits apply?
The maximum differential pressure is 3.44 bard at 82 degC for polypropylene and CAS media and 3.44 bard at 121 degC for glass fibre and HT media, for fluids compatible with the filter. Wet hydrocarbon limits are lower: 60 degC for GF and 100 degC for HT medium.
Why is inside-to-outside flow useful?
Contaminant stays inside the cartridge, so it cannot be released into the treated fluid when the cartridge is removed during change-out.
