Lovato DCRL3 Automatic Power Factor Controller, 3 Steps

Description

DCRL3 power factor controller: decoded part number

The DCRL3 is an automatic power factor controller from Lovato Electric with three relay outputs for switching capacitor steps. It measures the reactive power of the plant and switches capacitor contactors to keep the power factor close to the set target, which reduces reactive-energy charges and relieves cables and transformers.

Decoded: DCRL is the power factor controller family with a graphical icon display, and the 3 means three steps on board. The DCRL5 (5 steps) and DCRL8 (8 steps) siblings are available, and relay outputs can be extended with EXP modules.

How the DCRL3 works

The controller measures the system voltage and the current from a CT placed on one phase, calculates the reactive power and compares the power factor with the target. When the power factor is lower than target, it adds capacitor steps; when it is higher, it removes steps. It chooses steps to keep the switching count low and to share the wear evenly.

Because the DCRL3 identifies the direction of current flow automatically, it can be connected without worrying about CT polarity, and the four-quadrant function covers plants with local generation. The icon display shows the cos phi, step status and alarms.

A front optical port allows configuration from a PC or app, and the controller can be used in medium-voltage systems through measurement transformers.

Fit in the system and related Lovato Electric parts

The DCRL3 serves small capacitor banks of three steps. The larger DCRL5, DCRL8 or DCRG8 controllers suit more steps, and the DCTLA thyristor modules are for fast switching.

  • DCRL5 and DCRL8 for 5 or 8 steps
  • DCRG8 and DCRG8F for further features
  • EXP10 06 and EXP10 07 for extra relays
  • Capacitor contactors and capacitors from the same manufacturer

Selection and ordering checklist for the DCRL3

Before ordering the DCRL3, settle the following points so that the right variant is quoted:

  • Number and size of capacitor steps (three on board)
  • CT ratio, location and secondary of 1 A or 5 A
  • Auxiliary supply voltage
  • Target power factor and tariff conditions
  • Need for harmonics-detuned reactors if drives are present

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the DCRL3

Mount in a panel cut-out, connect the voltage, supply and CT correctly, and set the CT ratio, target cos phi and step values. Enter the capacitor step sizes in the controller so it can switch the right amount of reactive power, and check the step status afterwards.

Measure the actual power factor with and without the controller to verify the correction.

  • Check relay contacts and capacitor contactors regularly
  • Inspect capacitors for bulging
  • Verify the target after load changes
  • Back up the configuration

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

Power factor correction is common in industrial plants in Oman and GCC where inductive loads of pumps and compressors make up the main load, and the utility penalises low power factor. A small three-step controller serves modest capacitor banks at workshops, pumping stations and small process units.

When many variable-speed drives are present, harmonic distortion may require detuned capacitor banks and a controller that handles such conditions, so say so in your enquiry.

Remember that the controller is only the brain of the system: the capacitors, their contactors and the protection must be selected for the voltage, the harmonic level and the ambient temperature in the cabinet. In hot rooms capacitor life drops quickly with temperature, so ventilation of the capacitor bank deserves as much attention as the controller. Send us your single-line diagram or the existing bank data and we will confirm the controller model that matches the number of steps.

Site conditions in Oman for the DCRL3

Electrical rooms and outdoor panels in the Gulf often operate well above the 25 °C reference temperature used in many catalogues. Before you finalise the DCRL3, compare the expected panel temperature with the operating range and any output derating stated in the manufacturer documentation, and leave the recommended clearance above and below the device for convection. Supply quality also varies between sites, so confirm the input voltage range, frequency and any requirements for protection on the supply side.

Where the device feeds or monitors critical loads, plan how faults will be signalled to the control system and how a replacement can be installed quickly. Keeping one spare DCRL3 per site and recording its settings helps maintenance teams in Oman restore service with minimum downtime.

Lovato order codes describe the product. On a contactor such as BF0910A230, "BF09" is the frame and rated current (9 A in AC-3), "10" is the built-in auxiliary contact (one normally open), "A" means an AC coil and "230" is the coil voltage. The coil voltage must match the control circuit exactly, so it is the most common detail to check when replacing one. For motors, a soft starter limits the inrush current at start and stop, while a variable speed drive controls the speed continuously and saves energy on pumps and fans that do not need full flow all the time.

Where Lovato products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Lovato components are built into motor control centres, pump and HVAC panels, capacitor banks for power factor correction, generator and ATS panels, and machine control panels for industry, water and buildings.
