A wall-mounted 30 A active filter that cleans harmonics at the drive panel

The Circutor AFQs-3WF-030M (code R7MS0F) is an active multifunction filter for three-wire systems of 208 to 480 V, with a nominal filtering current of 30 A (60 A peak). Circutor designed the AFQs range for harmonic problems caused by variable-speed drives and small-to-medium-power non-linear loads, and it can be installed on the wall or inside cabinets next to the drives.

It reduces harmonic currents up to the 50th order, lets the installer select the harmonic frequencies for maximum filtering efficiency, and can also provide selectable phase and reactive power compensation. Up to 100 units of different sizes can be paralleled, with the transformer connection only on the master unit.

Sizing an active filter

The datasheet lists one model in the 3-wire 480 V wall-mounted cabinet: the AFQs-3WF-030M with 30 A phase current. Size by the harmonic current to be compensated rather than the drive kW: the filter needs to be at least as large as the RMS harmonic current of the loads, plus any reactive compensation selected (this sizing note is general engineering practice). Circutor asks to contact its technical department for networks with high voltage THD. Larger needs can be met by paralleling up to 100 units.

Installation and commissioning notes

Mount it on the wall, or inside the drive cabinet, using the M6 network and ground terminals and the six-pole current connector. Current transformers of 5/5 A to 20000/5 A measure the load current; follow the user manual for CT placement. Noise is below 60 dB(A) and the IP20 enclosure needs a clean, ventilated location within -10 to +55 C. When paralleling units, connect the transformers only to the master.

Where the AFQs-3WF-030M is used

Circutor recommends it for electrical panels that contain variable-speed drives or other low-to-medium power non-linear loads, and for filtering harmonics directly at the machine. Typical examples are pump and fan drives, compressors and conveyors; the filter also helps maintain power quality for generator-fed supplies, where harmonic voltage distortion is amplified (general engineering note).

Selection and installation notes

An active harmonic filter should be sized from the harmonic current measured at the point of connection, not only from the nominal load. Check the supply voltage and wiring system against the rating on the sheet, plan the current transformer positions and polarity, leave the clearances needed for cooling and keep the cable lengths short. After commissioning, measure the total harmonic distortion again and record the improvement so that the result can be compared with the project target.
