Brand:

Iskra IE38MD Three-Phase Energy Meter 80 A, MID, Modbus

Description

IE38MD is the Modbus version of the Iskra IE38Mx series: a three-phase, direct-connected DIN-rail energy meter for currents up to 80 A. It carries MID approval for class B active energy, adds class 2 reactive energy, and combines an S0 pulse output with RS485 Modbus RTU, a dual-tariff input and NFC read-out.

An 80 A metering point with Modbus, pulse output and touch operation

The meter measures directly in 3-wire and 4-wire networks and in single-phase systems. A capacitive touch button replaces mechanical keys: a short touch moves between screens, a long touch opens the menu, and a very long touch of about five seconds acts as escape. The 128 x 64 matrix LCD is white in normal operation and red when an alarm is active.

Energy is stored in two register sets. Four non-resettable registers can be assigned to active energy (MID), reactive energy (national approval) or apparent energy, and 16 additional registers can be set by the user for energy type, quadrant, counting direction and tariff. The limit control (alarm) function reports exceeded conditions and can trigger a BICOM bistable switch through the IR port.

Features stated in the data sheet

  • Class B active energy (EN 50470-3) with class 1 to EN 62053-21; class 2 reactive energy to IEC 62053-23.
  • Maximum current 80 A, 3 DIN modules wide, sealable terminal cover.
  • Variants: IE38MS 2 x S0, IE38MM S0 plus M-Bus, IE38MD S0 plus RS485 Modbus.
  • 230 V tariff input, up to six tariffs through communication, side IR port, NFC.
  • Operation from -25 to 70 C ambient.

Choosing the variant

The data sheet lists three article numbers: 022433926000 IE38MS (2 x S0, dual tariff, 80 A), 022433926100 IE38MM (S0 and M-Bus) and 022433926200 IE38MD (S0 and Modbus). All are MID approved with IR and NFC. Choose IE38MD when the meter must be read by a PLC, energy gateway or SCADA over RS485.

Main terminals take 1.5 to 25 mm2 flexible (16 mm2 rigid) conductors; the data sheet asks for 12 mm ferrules and 14 mm stripped wire at the main inputs.

Installation and settings

The manual requires connection by a qualified person and suggests a 3 x 80 A fuse for line protection. Main screws are M5 at 2 to 2.5 Nm, auxiliary screws M3 at 0.5 to 0.6 Nm. Connect the neutral and set the connection mode; an MID meter shows an Installation not set warning every five seconds until this is done.

Settings can be changed with the touch menu, with the MiQen software over communication, or through NFC. The manual notes that a mobile application for NFC communication is not available from the manufacturer. A Test measuring mode displays energy with higher resolution for verification.

Applications

General engineering note: an 80 A DIN meter with Modbus suits tenant sub-metering, industrial feeders to workshops and camps, and charging points. The data sheet describes use in residential, industrial and utility applications. For feeders above 80 A, a CT-connected meter such as the iMC740 is the usual alternative.

Sub-metering in Oman and the GCC

Direct-connected 80 A meters are used in the region for sub-metering tenants in commercial buildings, for tracking energy on HVAC plants, pumps and production lines, and for charging points and small solar systems. The Modbus output lets a building management or energy monitoring system read the values directly. Oman’s networks run at 50 Hz, and panels in plant rooms can run hot in summer, so check the panel’s internal temperature against the meter rating. Where the meter is used for billing, confirm with the local authority which approvals are required.
