AMETEK 993X Multi-Component UV Gas Analyzer

Description

AMETEK 993X multi-component UV gas analyzer for sulfur and acid gas streams

The AMETEK Western Research 993X is a continuous photometric gas analyzer that measures gas species by ultraviolet absorption and can add infrared and thermal conductivity sensing in the same cabinet. According to the manufacturer data sheet, one 993X can follow up to seven components at the same time, with no consumables or reagents in the measurement path. The 993X is built for wall mounting, outdoor service and unattended operation, with an integrated heated sample conditioning system.

Seven Star LLC supplies the 993X in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier based in Muscat. This page explains what the analyzer measures, how the specification reads, and which details we need from you to quote the right configuration of the 993X.

What the 993X measures

The ultraviolet bench handles H2S, SO2, NO, NO2, NOx, COS, CS2, NH3 and Cl2. Components that do not absorb UV light, such as CO2 and H2, are covered by an optional infrared sensor and a thermal conductivity detector (TCD). Ranges run from parts per million up to percent level, and the actual range of each component is set by the application rather than by the base model.

How the 993X works

A heated sample is drawn through the integrated conditioning system into a temperature-controlled optical bench. The bench uses highly focused emission lines and several wavelengths so that each absorbing gas can be separated from its neighbours. Keeping the bench at a controlled temperature is what limits drift when the ambient temperature around the cabinet moves through the day, which matters on an outdoor sulfur plant.

The data sheet quotes the sample heater as able to hold up to 165 °C so that liquids do not form in the sample path. In practice the 993X is normally supplied with a heated probe and heated sample lines, because the manufacturer states that heated transport is typically required between the process tap and the analyzer.

Where the 993X fits in a plant

The manufacturer lists sulfur recovery units, the tail gas treater quench tower inlet, tail gas treater absorber and quench tower outlets, amine treatment inlet, acid or sour gas and chemical processes as typical duties. Key markets named are sulfur recovery, refining and petrochemical, and natural gas. The ratio of H2S to SO2 in a Claus tail gas is the classic use, since it lets the unit control air demand, but the same optical bench is also applied to COS, CS2 and ammonia.

Related AMETEK Process Instruments analyzers that customers often compare with the 993X include the IPS-4 integrated photometric spectrometer, the Thermox WDG-V UOP/RP oxygen analyzer and the ta7000 purity monitors, all of which we can quote separately.

Selection checklist for a 993X order

  • List every component to be measured and its minimum and maximum concentration, including whether CO2 or H2 are needed (IR and TCD options).
  • State the sample gas composition, pressure and dew point so the heater class (standard or high-temperature oven) can be chosen.
  • Define the hazardous area: non-classified, Zone 2, Zone 1 purged, Zone 1 Exd or Class I Division 2. Weight and size change between versions, from about 100 kg standard to about 182 kg for the explosion-proof Zone 1 version.
  • Confirm the supply, 120 VAC or 240 VAC, and the number of 4–20 mA outputs required.
  • Decide whether a heated probe and heated line, and a calibration gas set, are part of the scope.

993X installation, commissioning and maintenance

The standard cabinet measures 839 x 1169 x 318 mm (W x H x D) and is wall mounted; the explosion-proof Zone 1 cabinet is 1270 x 1195 x 334 mm. Check wall or frame strength before ordering, since the heavier versions need a solid support. Plan nitrogen or instrument air for zeroing and a safe vent for the sample return.

During commissioning, verify zero with nitrogen or instrument air, apply span gases or a calibration cell, and set alarm relays against process limits. The local touch screen is used for day-to-day work and a web browser interface is available for remote access over Ethernet. Because there are no consumables or reagents in the measurement, routine work is mostly checking heated lines, filters, sample flow and lamp performance.

993X applications in Oman and the GCC

Gas processing, refinery sulfur units and acid gas removal plants in Oman and across the GCC run in high ambient heat, dust and humidity. A sealed IP66 stainless steel cabinet with a heated sample system suits that environment, and an outdoor wall-mounted unit shortens the sample line compared with a remote analyzer shelter. Typical sites are gas plants, refineries, petrochemical complexes and sour gas treatment facilities.

About brand

AMETEK is the American maker of electronic instruments and electromechanical devices, headquartered in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1930 as American Machine and Metals. In process industries it is known through brands such as Western Research (sulfur recovery and H2S analysers), Thermox (oxygen analysers), Land (pyrometers), Drexelbrook (RF level) and Chandler Engineering.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list AMETEK process analysers, pyrometers, portable testers and spare parts, and supply them to gas plants, refineries and power stations in Oman and the GCC.

120HD, Ranarex, Drexelbrook RCT-1210 Portable analysers and level Hydrogen purity in generators, gas specific gravity, RF level measurement

Most of these analysers work on light absorption. UV analysers such as the 933 and 9900 measure H2S and SO2 by their absorption bands, and tail gas analysers use this to keep the H2S to SO2 ratio near 2:1 for the best Claus conversion. TDLAS moisture analysers use a tuned laser on a single water line, so they respond fast and do not suffer from the glycol and methanol contamination that affects sensor-based analysers.

Where AMETEK instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, AMETEK analysers run on gas processing and sulfur recovery units, gas pipelines and custody points, refinery heaters and boilers, power station generators and steel and cement furnaces.
