Endress+Hauser FMR62B Micropilot Flanged Radar Level Sensor

Description

Endress+Hauser FMR62B 80 GHz flanged radar for demanding liquid tanks

The Endress+Hauser FMR62B is the premium flanged Micropilot radar for continuous, non-contact level measurement of liquids, pastes and sludges. Three antenna families are offered: a 316L horn with ceramic antenna and graphite seal, a PTFE drip-off antenna, and a PTFE cladded flush-mount antenna in 50 or 80 mm. With the horn version the FMR62B covers –196 to +450 °C and vacuum to 160 bar, with a maximum range of 80 m, and every version provides 4-20 mA HART at about 80 GHz.

Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, supplies the FMR62B in Oman and the GCC for refinery, gas processing, LNG, power and chemical tanks. The FMR62B suits high pressure, cryogenic, hot or corrosive services where the simpler FMR60B reaches its limits.

How the FMR62B antennas are chosen

The FMR62B measures by sending a narrow microwave beam to the liquid surface and timing the echo. What changes between versions is the antenna. The horn antenna has the narrowest beam, 4 degrees, so at 20 m distance it covers a circle of only about 1.4 m, and it is the right pick for tall tanks with ladders, pipes and heating coils. Its ceramic antenna and graphite seal let it work at 450 °C and 160 bar, or down to –196 °C for cryogenic liquids. The PTFE cladded flush-mount antenna presents a smooth PTFE face to the process, which suits corrosive products, steam service and small flanged nozzles. The drip-off antenna lets condensate run off in moderate-pressure tanks.

The datasheet gives a measuring range for each antenna in storage, buffer and agitated vessels, split by media group. For the horn antenna in a calm storage tank the values are 20 m for group A0 (εr 1.2 to 1.4), 36 m for group A, 45 m for group B, 58 m for group C and 72 m for group D, so the full 80 m is a best-case figure for strongly reflecting liquids. If the dielectric constant is unknown, assume group B.

Where the FMR62B fits and related Micropilot sensors

Within the Micropilot B-series the FMR60B is the thread-connected sensor for simple tanks, the FMR62B is the flanged high-end version for aggressive and high-pressure liquids, and the FMR63B is the hygienic version. The FMR43 is the compact hygienic sensor for small tanks. When the vapour phase absorbs microwaves (ammonia, VCM, acetone and similar), the maker recommends a guided radar such as the Levelflex or another principle. Typical loop partners are a HART-capable DCS or SIS input card, a safety barrier for Ex i versions, and the SmartBlue app for configuration at the tank.

FMR62B selection and ordering checklist

  • Liquid, dielectric constant or media group, and risk of foam, deposits or heavy vapour.
  • Tank height and surface condition, internals and nozzle size and length.
  • Maximum and minimum process temperature, pressure, and steam or cryogenic service.
  • Antenna (horn, drip-off, cladded flush) and flange standard, size and rating.
  • Seal and wetted materials compatible with the medium.
  • Housing, cable entry, display and Bluetooth.
  • Hazardous-area approvals, SIL level, CRN or marine approvals if required.

FMR62B installation, commissioning and maintenance

Install the FMR62B with the antenna axis perpendicular to the surface and away from the filling stream. For the horn antenna the insertion hole must be larger than the horn, and the datasheet gives a separate procedure for holes between 42 and 66 mm. Keep internal fixtures out of the beam cone, and pay attention to the 10 mm safety margin before the tip of the antenna so that deposits or corrosion do not damage the end of the range.

Commissioning is guided through the display, HART or SmartBlue, with an interference echo map taken after installation. Because the sensor has a Radar Accuracy Index and Heartbeat Verification, the calibration interval can be extended and proof tests carried out without emptying the tank. Plan seal inspection with every major shutdown, especially on hot or steam services.

FMR62B applications in Oman and the GCC

In the Gulf, the FMR62B is typically specified on crude and product storage, separator and knock-out vessels, LPG and condensate bullets, chemical tanks, boiler feedwater and deaerators, and cryogenic storage. Ambient heat and direct sun at outdoor tanks, as well as dusty air, are well covered by the sealed IP66/68 housing and the ambient range of –40 to +85 °C. Tall tanks with internals benefit from the narrow 4 degree horn beam.

Where Endress+Hauser instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, Endress+Hauser instruments are common in oil and gas production and processing, refineries and petrochemicals, desalination and water networks, wastewater treatment, power plants and food and beverage plants. Coriolis meters measure hydrocarbon and chemical flows, electromagnetic meters cover water and wastewater, radar transmitters handle tank and silo level, and Liquiline analysers monitor water quality. Proline 300 and 500 flowmeters include Heartbeat Technology for in-situ verification, which reduces the need to remove a meter for checks.

Ordering Endress+Hauser instruments: what we need

The order code on the nameplate (for example PMP71-1QA1S11RDADU) defines every option: measuring range, process connection, materials, output, approvals and display. Send it with the serial number; Endress+Hauser can retrieve the original configuration from the serial number. For a new instrument add the medium, operating and design pressure and temperature, range, line size or tank geometry, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Modbus) and the hazardous-area approval required. Older models such as Promass 80/83 or Micropilot M are replaced by current Proline or 80 GHz Micropilot devices.

FAQ

Questions about the Endress+Hauser FMR62B Micropilot Flanged Radar

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What is the Endress+Hauser FMR62B?
The FMR62B is a flanged 80 GHz Micropilot radar for non-contact level measurement of liquids, pastes and sludges, with horn, drip-off or PTFE cladded flush-mount antennas and a 4-20 mA HART output.
02What temperature and pressure can the FMR62B handle?
The horn antenna with graphite seal covers -196 to +450 C and -1 to 160 bar. The PTFE cladded antennas are rated to 25 bar and the drip-off antenna to 16 bar, with temperatures up to 200 C.
03How far does the FMR62B measure?
The maximum range is 80 m for the 65 mm horn and the 80 mm cladded antenna, and 50 m for the 50 mm antennas. In practice the range depends on the dielectric constant and vessel type.
04What beam angle does the FMR62B have?
The horn antenna has a 4 degree beam, the drip-off antenna 6 degrees and the cladded flush-mount antenna 7 degrees. A narrow beam helps in tanks with many internals.
05Does the FMR62B support SIL applications?
Yes, the device is designed to SIL 2 under IEC 61508, with SIL 3 for homogeneous redundancy, and includes guided proof testing for SIL and WHG, depending on the version ordered.
