Endress+Hauser FMR43 Micropilot Hygienic Radar Level Sensor

Description

Endress+Hauser FMR43 hygienic compact radar level sensor

The Endress+Hauser FMR43 is a Micropilot free-space radar for continuous, non-contact level measurement of liquids, and also solids, in hygienic and small-vessel applications. It is a compact two-wire HART transmitter in a stainless steel housing, with a PTFE or PEEK antenna and a process connection chosen from Tri-Clamp, M24 adapter or threaded options. Depending on the order option, the FMR43 works at 80 GHz or 180 GHz, and the higher frequency gives a narrow beam that fits small connections and tanks full of internals.

Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, supplies the FMR43 in Oman and the GCC for water treatment, chemical dosing, food and beverage, pharmaceutical utilities and similar plants. On this page we explain what the FMR43 measures, how the 80 GHz and 180 GHz versions differ, and what to send for a correct FMR43 quotation.

How the FMR43 radar measures

The FMR43 sends out a short radar signal through its antenna and receives the echo from the surface. The delay gives the distance, and the electronics convert it into level, volume or mass using the linearization function. A small antenna normally means a wide beam, but the 180 GHz FMR43 keeps the beam angle near 8 degrees on a half-inch connection, so only a thin cone is lit. Reflections from tank walls, heating coils and agitator blades are therefore reduced, which is why this model is picked for small vessels with many fixtures.

Echo strength depends on the product. The datasheet groups liquids by dielectric constant: group A (εr 1.4 to 1.9) for liquefied gas type products, B (1.9 to 4) for oils and solvents, C (4 to 10) for concentrated acids and organic solvents, and D (above 10) for water-based and conductive liquids. If the value is unknown, the maker advises assuming group B. Range then depends on the vessel type: calm storage tank, buffer vessel with moving surface, or agitated vessel.

FMR43 range by connection and application

Connection / frequency Storage tank, group B Agitated vessel, group B Agitated vessel, group D
Thread G¾, G1, M24 / 80 GHz 5 m 1.5 m 5 m
Thread G1½, NEUMO BioControl D50 / 80 GHz 11 m 3 m 11 m
Tri-Clamp 1½ / 2 in / 80 GHz 15 m 7 m 15 m
Thread ½, M24 / 180 GHz 10 m 7 m 10 m

For Tri-Clamp and 180 GHz connections in a storage tank the usable range is always 15 m or 10 m respectively, as stated in the datasheet table notes.

Where the FMR43 fits and related Micropilot sensors

The FMR43 is the compact hygienic model in the Micropilot range. For larger process connections, higher pressures and temperatures, or longer range, Endress+Hauser offers the FMR60B (to 50 m, up to +200 °C), the FMR62B (to 80 m, –196 to +450 °C) and the hygienic FMR63B (to 80 m). Solids silos use the FMR66B, and probe-based measurement is the Levelflex FMP57. In a loop the FMR43 connects to the same HART-capable PLC, DCS or loop indicator as other two-wire instruments, and adapters from the maker’s hygienic accessory range let it fit standard weld-in sockets.

FMR43 selection and ordering checklist

  • Medium, dielectric constant or media group, and whether it foams or builds up.
  • Vessel type (storage, buffer, agitated), height, and internal fixtures.
  • Operating frequency version: 80 GHz or 180 GHz, as this decides the connection and antenna material.
  • Process connection: thread, M24, Tri-Clamp, or NEUMO BioControl D50; seal FKM or EPDM.
  • Maximum process temperature and pressure, plus CIP/SIP cycles.
  • Hygienic certificates required: 3-A, EHEDG, ASME BPE or cGMP documents.
  • Hazardous area approval where needed, and Bluetooth and display options.

FMR43 installation, commissioning and maintenance

Mount the FMR43 so that the antenna points straight down at the product, away from the filling stream and from objects inside the beam. The datasheet lists a free beam cone for each connection and requires that no fixtures cross it. Use the correct adapter and gasket for the hygienic connection, and respect the pressure and temperature limits of both the sensor and the adapter during CIP and SIP. The 80 GHz versions comply with the EN 302372 tank level probing radar standard and are for closed vessels, with the installation points of that standard observed.

Commissioning is guided through the LED indicator, the optional display, HART or the SmartBlue app. Map any fixed interference echo during setup. In service, wipe condensation or product film from the antenna as part of normal cleaning, check the seal at shutdowns, and use Heartbeat Technology to verify the sensor without removing it.

FMR43 applications in Oman and the GCC

In Oman and the wider GCC the FMR43 is a good match for desalination and water treatment chemical dosing tanks, small day tanks, food and dairy processing, beverage plants and pharmaceutical utilities. Hot ambient temperatures, direct sun on outdoor skids and frequent washdowns matter, so the IP69 rating and the stainless steel housing are useful. Because the radar does not touch the product, it avoids the fouling and corrosion that affect contact sensors in aggressive cleaning chemicals.

Where Endress+Hauser instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, Endress+Hauser instruments are common in oil and gas production and processing, refineries and petrochemicals, desalination and water networks, wastewater treatment, power plants and food and beverage plants. Coriolis meters measure hydrocarbon and chemical flows, electromagnetic meters cover water and wastewater, radar transmitters handle tank and silo level, and Liquiline analysers monitor water quality. Proline 300 and 500 flowmeters include Heartbeat Technology for in-situ verification, which reduces the need to remove a meter for checks.

Ordering Endress+Hauser instruments: what we need

The order code on the nameplate (for example PMP71-1QA1S11RDADU) defines every option: measuring range, process connection, materials, output, approvals and display. Send it with the serial number; Endress+Hauser can retrieve the original configuration from the serial number. For a new instrument add the medium, operating and design pressure and temperature, range, line size or tank geometry, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Modbus) and the hazardous-area approval required. Older models such as Promass 80/83 or Micropilot M are replaced by current Proline or 80 GHz Micropilot devices.

FAQ

Questions about the Endress+Hauser FMR43 Micropilot Hygienic Radar

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What is the Endress+Hauser FMR43?
The FMR43 is a compact two-wire Micropilot radar level sensor with HART for hygienic applications. It measures liquids, and also solids, without touching the product.
02What is the difference between 80 GHz and 180 GHz on the FMR43?
The 80 GHz versions suit threaded, Tri-Clamp and BioControl connections with ranges up to 15 m, while the 180 GHz versions use a narrow beam for very small connections and tanks with internals, with a range up to 10 m.
03What temperature and pressure can the FMR43 handle?
The process range reaches -40 to +150 C with EPDM seal and -1 to 20 bar. FKM seals start at -10 C, and the 80 GHz PEEK versions are rated to 130 C with 150 C allowed for 20 minutes.
04Is the FMR43 suitable for CIP and SIP cleaning?
Yes, the 3-A and EHEDG certified versions are suitable for CIP and SIP without removal, up to IP69. The pressure and temperature limits of both sensor and adapter must be respected.
05What power supply does the FMR43 need?
It is loop powered from 12 to 30 VDC with a 4-20 mA HART output. In hazardous areas a galvanically isolated active barrier is used on the supply.
