H2scan GRIDSCAN 5000 Transformer Dissolved Hydrogen Monitor

Description

Continuous dissolved hydrogen monitoring for transformer fleets

GRIDSCAN 5000 is a dedicated hydrogen sensor that mounts on a transformer and monitors dissolved hydrogen in the oil or in the gas space. Hydrogen is often the first fault gas to rise when a transformer begins to degrade, and the datasheet positions the GRIDSCAN as an early warning that flags a developing fault before it becomes a catastrophic failure.

H2scan describes the sensor as using patented self-calibration, so no calibration gases, consumables or scheduled maintenance are required. Connectivity is 2-wire RS-485 with Modbus and DNP3, a 4-20 mA analog output is optional, and data can be aggregated through the H2cloud fleet platform or fed into SCADA, IoT platforms, OEM transformer monitoring or multi-gas DGA systems.

Model 5000 versus 5000-HP

Two accuracy grades are printed. The standard 5000 is specified to 20% of reading or 25 ppm, and the 5000-HP to 10% of reading or 15 ppm, in both cases whichever is greater. At 100 ppm hydrogen, the permitted error of the 5000 is therefore 25 ppm and that of the 5000-HP is 15 ppm (derived from the printed formulas). Pick the HP grade where trend alarms are set at low ppm values.

Applications and installation notes

Typical use is on power transformers in utility substations, generator step-up transformers at power and water plants, and industrial transformers at refineries and LNG sites. The rugged build, with salt-water condensing and submersible ratings and a vibration and shock test list, suits coastal Gulf substations.

The wetted parts must be compatible with the insulating liquid, and the datasheet lists mineral oil, silicone, natural ester and synthetic ester. Response time is below 60 minutes because dissolved hydrogen must diffuse to the sensor, so GRIDSCAN is a trend monitor and not a real-time protection relay. See related products under gas analyzer systems.

Fleet rollout considerations

The datasheet lists an M12 4-wire connector and a 3/4-14 NPT process fitting, which is a common valve thread on transformer drain or sampling ports, but the adapter needed depends on the transformer; confirm with the manufacturer manual and your transformer drawings. The unit draws up to 10 W from 12 to 48 VDC, a range that covers substation 24 V, 48 V and many 110 V battery systems only after conversion (not a direct fit above 48 V).

Vibration and shock are specified in detail: 3-axis sinusoidal, wide-band and random vibration tests with IEC 61373 Category 1B, and shock of 30 g for 18 ms, with Class 4M6 per IEC 60721-3-4. Together with the salt-water condensing rating, this supports use on pole-mounted and offshore-type transformers.

Document control: the datasheet used here is H2scan document 90000192, dated 8.26, and it states that specifications are subject to change without notice. H2scan publishes the operation manual, a Modbus register map and a quick start guide for GRIDSCAN 5000 separately, so request them for SCADA integration work.

Using hydrogen trends in a transformer maintenance plan

Hydrogen is produced by almost every fault type inside an oil-filled transformer, including partial discharge, overheating of oil and insulation, and arcing, which is why it is used as the first warning gas. General engineering note (not from the datasheet): a single hydrogen value says less than its rate of change, so set alarms on both the absolute level and the rise per day or week, and confirm any alarm with a laboratory dissolved gas analysis interpreted to IEEE C57.104 or IEC 60599. The laboratory analysis identifies the fault type from the full gas pattern, while the GRIDSCAN 5000 tells the asset owner when that analysis is needed.

When planning a fleet roll-out, start with the transformers that matter most to supply security or have a known history, such as generator step-up units, grid substation transformers and units feeding critical process plants. Check the available valve or port on each tank before ordering, and agree the communication path, Modbus, DNP3 or H2cloud, with the SCADA team early. In the high ambient temperatures of Oman and the GCC, mount the sensor where it is not exposed to direct sun for most of the day where the tank layout allows it.

About brand

H2scan is an American maker of solid-state hydrogen sensors and analysers, founded in 2002 and based in Valencia, California. Its first product commercialised a wide-range hydrogen sensor developed at Sandia National Laboratories. H2scan's monitors measure hydrogen directly in process streams, battery rooms and power transformers.

Seven Star LLC lists H2scan hydrogen process analyzers, area monitors and transformer monitors for buyers in Oman and the GCC, and we answer each inquiry against the manufacturer's own datasheet.
