Brand:

H2scan GRIDSCAN 6200 Multi-Sense Transformer Health Monitor

Description

One sensor head for hydrogen, moisture, temperature and pressure

GRIDSCAN 6200 extends the single-gas GRIDSCAN 5000 into a multi-sense transformer health monitor. It continuously measures dissolved hydrogen, moisture (water activity), insulating liquid temperature and pressure in the transformer oil space, and flags a developing fault before it becomes a failure.

The datasheet states long-term accuracy with no calibration gases, consumables or scheduled maintenance, Modbus and DNP3 over three-wire RS-485 with a 5-pin M16 connector for power and communication, 12 to 24 VDC input at 10 W maximum, and dynamic data log storage. The housing is IP68 and marine-rated to a Class C5M equivalent.

Applications and installation notes

Moisture in the oil and hydrogen from partial discharge or overheating are two of the key transformer health indicators, so combining them with oil temperature and pressure helps to separate a real fault from a loading or ambient effect. Utilities with large fleets, industrial plants with critical transformers and renewable sites with variable loading are the kinds of operators the monitoring approach is aimed at (our reading, not a datasheet statement).

Operating altitude is up to 3000 m and the operating pressure at the sensor must stay between 0.9 and 2 bar absolute, which excludes full-vacuum filling states. Plan the valve interface and cable gland to preserve the IP68 rating. Related equipment is grouped under gas analyzer systems.

6200 compared with the GRIDSCAN 5000

The 5000 is hydrogen only, runs from 12 to 48 VDC and offers an optional 4-20 mA output with a 3/4-14 NPT fitting. The 6200 adds moisture, temperature and pressure channels, uses a 12 to 24 VDC supply and a 5-pin M16 connector, and is 190.8 mm long. Choose the 5000 for a lean hydrogen-only fleet rollout and the 6200 where oil moisture and temperature trending is also needed.

Reading the multi-sense data

The accuracy figures differ by channel and should drive alarm design. Hydrogen is quoted at 20% of reading or 25 ppm, moisture at 2% RS below 20% and 8% RS between 20% and 50%, pressure at 2% of full scale and temperature at 2.5°C. For moisture, the datasheet expresses results as water activity (RS), which is relative saturation of the oil and not ppm; conversion to ppm depends on oil type and temperature and is not given in the datasheet.

H2scan lists that the sensor works up to 3000 m altitude and in liquid temperatures from -40 to 105°C, with survival to 135°C. Data from all four channels reach SCADA over Modbus or DNP3, or reach the cloud via H2cloud, so a single device can replace separate hydrogen, moisture and temperature sensors when the valve port is limited.

Document control: the datasheet used here is H2scan document 90000314, dated 8.26. H2scan publishes a separate operation manual, quick start guide, Modbus register map and DNP3 device profile for the GRIDSCAN 6000 family, and these are needed for SCADA integration and for setting up the moisture, pressure and temperature channels.

Why moisture and hydrogen belong together

Moisture in transformer oil and paper insulation lowers dielectric strength and speeds up ageing of the paper, while hydrogen signals a developing electrical or thermal fault. General engineering note (not from the datasheet): reading both from one sensor head lets the asset owner tell apart a wet but healthy transformer from one with an active fault, and the oil temperature and pressure readings give the context needed to interpret water activity, which changes with temperature as moisture moves between oil and paper. Any hydrogen alarm should still be confirmed by laboratory dissolved gas analysis interpreted to IEEE C57.104 or IEC 60599.

For installation, check the tank valve size and position, plan the 5-pin M16 cable route for power and RS-485, and agree whether the data goes to SCADA over DNP3 or Modbus, to H2cloud, or both. Large power transformers in substations and generating plants in Oman and the GCC see high load and high ambient temperature in summer, so continuous moisture and temperature data is especially useful for planning oil processing or dry-out work during cooler months.

About brand

H2scan is an American maker of solid-state hydrogen sensors and analysers, founded in 2002 and based in Valencia, California. Its first product commercialised a wide-range hydrogen sensor developed at Sandia National Laboratories. H2scan's monitors measure hydrogen directly in process streams, battery rooms and power transformers.

Seven Star LLC lists H2scan hydrogen process analyzers, area monitors and transformer monitors for buyers in Oman and the GCC, and we answer each inquiry against the manufacturer's own datasheet.
