EV250B 18: a 2/2-way valve that opens from zero pressure difference

Servo-operated valves such as the EV220B need a minimum differential pressure, but the Danfoss 032U5254 does not: it is an EV250B 18 with assisted-lift operation, which means the armature helps lift the diaphragm so that the valve opens even at 0 bar. That is the central reason to select it, for example in gravity-fed tanks, low-head circulation loops or applications where the pressure cannot be guaranteed.

The body is DZR brass with a G 3/4 connection, an 18 mm orifice and a Kv of 6 m3/h. The EPDM seals suit technical and soft water, with a medium range of -30 to 120 C and a maximum pressure of 10 bar. SINTEF and UA approvals are listed in the store entry.

Where zero-differential operation helps

Typical uses include water treatment dosing lines, tank drains, boiler make-up from a header tank and rinse circuits in washing equipment. The application field on the store page is “closed and drain”, so the unit is chosen to close and drain off water as needed, with the coil sold separately.

The listed opening time of 150 ms and closing time of 100 ms are estimates on water. The valve is faster than the EV220B 32 or 50 sizes, which makes water hammer more likely on long pipes, so install a short run and fix the pipe near the valve.

Installation and ordering

Use a strainer and keep to the maximum medium temperature of 120 C. The installation guide for the EV250B gives maximum working pressure of 10 bar and a 15 bar test pressure for DN 10 to 22 sizes, which agrees with the store values. The coil must be ordered separately, with plug and connector.

For maintenance planning, treat the valve like any wetted component: flush the line before commissioning to remove weld slag and sand, avoid running it dry for long periods and replace the coil if the housing shows discolouration. A spare valve and a spare coil of the same voltage cost little compared with a stopped treatment plant.

Because the opening time is short, a quarter-turn isolation valve upstream helps with maintenance.
