Brand:

ABB EF19-18.9 Electronic Overload Relay 5.7-18.9 A

Description

EF19-18.9: the top current range of the compact EF19 relay

EF19-18.9 is the highest of the five setting ranges of the EF19 electronic overload relay: 5.7 to 18.9 A. It mounts straight onto ABB AF09 to AF38 block contactors, and it takes power from the motor current itself, so no auxiliary supply is wired.

ABB positions electronic relays as the alternative to thermal overload relays. The selectable trip classes 10E, 20E and 30E let a single device cover normal and heavier starting loads, and temperature compensation holds the setting over -25 to +70 C.

How the EF19 protects the motor

The relay has an ampere scale, so you set the motor rated current directly. In line with the standard, the setting is the motor current, not the trip current: ABB states no tripping at 1.05 x the setting and tripping at 1.2 x. Phase-loss sensitivity is included, and the trip contact 95-96 opens the contactor coil circuit.

Short-circuit protection is the installer’s job; ABB gives a 50 A gG fuse for this range. Power loss is only 0.304 W per pole at 18.9 A. At 15 operations per hour, or 60 per hour with 40 percent duty, you stay inside the no-early-trip limit, provided starting time does not exceed 1 s.

Choosing the range and the mounting method

The 18.9 A range suits motors of roughly 3 to 7.5 kW at 400 V. If the motor is lower, the EF19-6.3 (1.9 to 6.3 A) gives better resolution. Because the relay clips under the contactor, the DB19EF single-mounting kit is needed to put it on a DIN rail instead.

Wire the signalling contact 97-98 to the PLC for a trip indication and keep reset automatic or manual according to the plant rule.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
