ABB AF38-40-00-13 4-Pole Contactor 55 A 100-250 V AC/DC

Description

Four-pole AF38 contactor for resistive and changeover loads

AF38-40-00-13 is the 4-pole member of the AF38 family: four normally open main poles on the same 45 mm wide body as the 3-pole units. ABB describes the AF 4-pole contactors as intended for non-inductive or slightly inductive loads such as resistance furnaces, so this is the type to look at for heater banks, neutral switching and changeover schemes rather than as a general motor starter.

It carries 55 A thermal current and 55 A in AC-1 at 40 C. The coil is the wide-range 100…250 V type that takes AC or DC, and the datasheet confirms built-in surge protection and an electronic coil interface.

Using four poles: what the figures mean

The AC-3 figures in the table apply when the poles are used for motor switching: 22 A at 400 V, or 11 kW. That is well below the 38 A of the 3-pole AF38-30-00-13, so do not size a motor feeder from the 3-pole figure. For heating or lighting circuits, AC-1 is the relevant column, and 55 A at 40 C falls to 45 A at 60 C and 37 A at 70 C.

Short-time withstand is 450 A for one second. ABB gives a 63 A gG fuse for contactor short-circuit protection up to 500 V, and the same 4-pole range has DC capability up to 440 V according to the e-catalogue description.

Type code and compatible parts

AF38 is the frame size, 40 means four main poles, 00 means no auxiliary contacts, and 13 selects the 100…250 V coil. The datasheet also lists -11, -12 and -14 coil codes and low-consumption AF38Z versions. Side-mounted auxiliary blocks such as CA4-10, CAL4-11-T, CA4-22E and CA4-40E appear in the datasheet accessory table.

If you need three poles on the same frame for motor duty, the AF38-30-00-13 is the matching item; the AF09-30-10-11 contactor shows the smaller AF concept.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
