ABB AF116-30-11-13 3-Pole Contactor 55 kW 100-250 V AC/DC

Description

AF116 contactor for 55 kW motor starters

AF116-30-11-13 is the first size in the large AF range, where ABB moves from the compact 45 mm bodies to a 90 mm wide block with double-clamp terminals. It is rated 116 A in AC-3 up to 440 V, which the ABB table maps to 55 kW at 400 V, and 160 A in AC-1 at 40 C. One N.O. and one N.C. auxiliary contact are built in.

The coil is the 100…250 V AC/DC type, so one part number serves 230 V mains and 110 V or 220 V DC control. ABB’s product text lists motor starting, isolation, by-pass and distribution as typical uses up to 690 V.

Selecting the AF116 for pumps and compressors

A 55 kW motor at 400 V draws roughly 100 A, so the 116 A AC-3 rating leaves headroom for starting duty. At 690 V the AC-3 current drops to 65 A, and at 500 V it is 110 A. For heater or distribution duty, AC-1 is 160 A at 40 C and 130 A at 70 C, so cabinet heat matters.

The short-time withstand current is 1160 A for 1 s, and ABB lists a 250 A gG fuse for short-circuit protection of the contactor itself. Making capacity is 10 x Ie and breaking capacity 8 x Ie in AC-3, per the e-catalogue. DC switching is possible with poles in series, up to 145 A at 220 V with three poles.

Order code and what sits beside it

AF116 is the frame, 30 means three main poles, 11 means one N.O. plus one N.C. built-in auxiliary contact, and 13 identifies the 100…250 V coil. The AF116 shares its 90 x 150 x 126 mm body and 1.55 kg weight with the AF140 in the e-catalogue, so you can upgrade the rating without changing the panel layout.

ABB’s EF146 electronic overload relay is described for AF116 to AF146 contactors, and add-on auxiliary blocks also fit this frame.

Documents and quotation

The linked file is an extract (pages 19 and 20) of ABB’s AF range catalogue 1SXU100109C0201, covering the AF116 to AF370 ordering tables; the e-catalogue entry for 1SFL427001R1311 supplied the technical values. Seven Star LLC supplies the AF116-30-11-13 on request from Muscat, and availability and lead time are given in the quotation. See the Contactors and Overload Relays category for other starters.

Confirm before ordering: control voltage and frequency, motor current at your supply voltage, the terminal type for your cable, and whether auxiliary contacts beyond the built-in 1 N.O. + 1 N.C. are needed.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
