Bender RCMS460-D-2 12-Channel Residual Current Monitor

Description

Twelve residual-current channels in one DIN rail device

The Bender RCMS460-D-2 is a multi-channel residual current monitor from the LINETRAXX range for earthed AC, DC and AC/DC systems (TN and TT systems). Each device has 12 measuring channels for residual current measurement or digital inputs, so one unit can supervise a dozen feeders through external measuring current transformers. The datasheet explains that the transformer type decides the sensitivity: CTAC, WR, WS and WF series cover alternating and pulsating currents (type A), while closed CTBS25 or CTUB100 series transformers cover AC/DC-sensitive currents (type B per IEC/TR 60755). Up to 90 devices can be linked on a BMS bus, giving up to 1080 channels.

The -2 in RCMS460-D-2 means the 70 to 276 V supply version (AC/DC); the -1 version takes 16 to 94 V. The article number is B94053002. The D4 variants add an extended current measurement range for channels 9 to 12.

Frequency response, offsets and combinations

For personnel, fire or plant protection the frequency response can be set per channel with cut-off frequencies of none, IEC, 50 Hz or 60 Hz, so that harmonics from drives either count or are filtered. An offset of 0 to 20 A (30 mA default) and a factor for additional transformers allow current ratios to be matched. The measured currents can be analysed for harmonics. A residual current relay of this kind does not disconnect by itself: the alarm relays and the BMS bus signal a controller or a COMTRAXX gateway such as the COM465IP, which Bender lists as an accessory.

Installation notes

  • Type B (AC/DC) measurement needs CTBS25 or CTUB100 transformers, supplied with 24 V DC; Bender lists STEP-PS power supplies (B94053110, B94053111 and B94053112) for up to 4, 14 and 34 CTUB100 transformers.
  • Run the BMS bus in shielded twisted pair J-Y(St)Y min. 2 x 0.8, shield earthed at one end only.
  • Set the device address unique on the bus and switch on the terminating resistor at the last device.
  • Transformer wiring: keep to the maximum cable lengths in the table; connect via plug-in connector CTXS.
  • An RS-485 repeater DI-1PSM (B95012044) is available for longer bus runs.

Where it is used

Residual current monitoring detects developing insulation deterioration in earthed systems before it trips a breaker. Data centres, process plants and large commercial buildings in the Gulf use multi-channel monitors in distribution boards. See the relays category for other monitoring devices.

Selection and installation notes

Insulation and residual current monitoring devices are selected from the system type (IT, TN or TT), the system voltage, the leakage capacitance and the alarm levels needed. Connect the device to the system and to earth as the manual shows, set the response values from the system design, check the coupling or measuring current transformer and its wiring, and test the alarm and relay outputs after commissioning. Do not do an insulation test of the plant with the monitor connected unless the manual allows it.

Information needed for a quotation

Send the full model code, the quantity, the delivery location in Oman or the GCC, the intended use and any accessories needed, so that the complete package can be quoted together.

Documents and supply information

The manufacturer data sheet is attached to this page and should be read together with the project specification and the site risk assessment before a purchase is confirmed. Ratings, standards and dimensions are quoted as printed on that sheet. Lead time, stock position and certificates available with the shipment are confirmed in the quotation, and we supply to Oman and the wider GCC region for industrial, utility and building services projects.
