A universal-input touchscreen controller for cooling, boiler and disinfection control

The Intuition-6 series from Walchem is a wall-mount water treatment controller that reads conductivity, pH, ORP and disinfection sensors and drives chemical metering pumps and valves. A large touchscreen with icon-based programming makes setup straightforward, and a universal sensor input means the same controller hardware can be configured for almost any sensor the application needs. Walchem offers the platform as boiler (WBL6), cooling tower (WCT6), disinfectant (WDS6), pH (WPH6), conductivity (WCN6) and Pyxis oxidizer plus pH (WPD6) controllers.

Six relay control outputs, six virtual inputs and six virtual outputs allow complete flexibility in the function of each relay, including lead/lag control. On-screen and web-page graphing show sensor values and output status, and the controller can send e-mail alarm messages, datalogs, graphs and system summary reports.

Control strategies and ordering code

Each relay can be assigned to a different control strategy, so a single WCT6 can handle bleed, inhibitor feed, biocide timing and pH control without extra hardware. Walchem notes that the Intuition-6 with amperometric chlorine sensors can be used for reporting chlorine measurements in accordance with EPA Method 334.0. An optional Ethernet board provides remote access through the internet or a LAN, and a second option adds Modbus TCP and BACnet.

The model code is built in blocks: relays and wiring (for example 000 for six powered relays, or 100 for two powered and four dry relays), power cord, input board (one sensor board, one dual analog board or a combination board), analog outputs, Ethernet, sensor mounting and sensors. Mounting choices run from no sensors to submersion, in-line, loose flow-switch manifold or a panel-mounted manifold, with low- or high-pressure versions.

Selecting sensors and what to confirm

Sensor ratings matter as much as the controller. The brochure lists pressure and temperature limits for each sensor type, such as 0 to 250 psi and up to 205 °C for boiler contacting conductivity, 0 to 150 psi for cooling-tower conductivity, and 0 to 14.7 psi for the membrane-style disinfection sensors for free chlorine, total chlorine, chlorine dioxide, ozone, peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide. Walchem recommends its WEL or WDS pH/ORP sensors for the amplified inputs.

Before ordering, confirm the process (boiler, tower, potable, wastewater), the sensor types and ranges, the number of pumps and valves to be driven, the supply and plug standard, the communication protocol required, and whether pH or ORP sensors need a preamplifier ordered separately. Because the code defines the factory build, send the full model code with the request for quotation.
