Elga Cromarod 309MoL E309MoL-17 Dissimilar Steel Electrode
Description
Rutile 23Cr-12Ni-2.5Mo electrode for dissimilar and buffer-layer joints
The Elga Cromarod 309MoL is a rutile flux-coated stainless electrode classified AWS A5.4 E309MoL-17 and EN ISO 3581-A E 23 12 2 L R 32. It deposits an austenitic weld metal of about 23% chromium, 12% nickel and 2.5% molybdenum with a ferrite number of about 20 (WRC-92). Elga explains that the high alloy content and ferrite level let the weld metal tolerate dilution from dissimilar and difficult-to-weld materials without hot cracking or brittle structures.

Applications named by Elga
The data sheet lists four uses: dissimilar joints between stainless steel and mild, low-alloy or medium-carbon steel; buffer layers on mild and low-alloy steel before overlaying with Cromarod 316L; interface runs in 316L clad steel; and joining medium-carbon hardenable steels such as armour plate. After surfacing carbon steel with two layers, Elga states that the corrosion resistance is about the same as 316L material.
Why the molybdenum and ferrite matter
When stainless filler is deposited on carbon steel, iron from the base metal dilutes the weld and pulls the composition toward martensitic or low-ferrite structures that crack. Starting from an over-alloyed 309-type deposit leaves enough chromium and nickel after dilution to stay austenitic with a controlled ferrite content. The 2.5% molybdenum adds pitting resistance, so a single buffer layer can serve as the base for a 316L cover pass in chemical service.
One limitation to note: the data sheet states that the AWS classification and ABS approval apply to diameters up to 3.2 mm and are not valid for 4.0 mm and above. Also keep in mind the 350 °C, two-hour redrying temperature, which is much higher than for carbon steel rutile types. Our Elga Cromarod Duplex page is a related stainless option for a different alloy family.

About brand
Elga is a Swedish brand of welding consumables, started in 1938 in Gothenburg when engineer Carl Alfredson founded AB El & Gassvetsning. Elga produced its first coated electrodes in the 1940s and introduced the Cromarod range of stainless steel electrodes in the 1980s. Since 2000 the brand has been part of Illinois Tool Works (ITW), and it is made by ITW Welding AB in Partille, Sweden.
Elga product ranges
The Cromarod family covers covered electrodes for stainless, duplex and nickel-base work, with Cromamig and Cromatig solid wires and Cromacore flux-cored wires alongside it. For carbon and low-alloy steel, the P 48M basic electrode is a low hydrogen type for high strength low alloy steel. Elga also offers seamless cored wires.
Ordering Elga consumables: what we need
State the exact product name, for example Cromarod Duplex, the classification your procedure specifies, the diameter and length of the electrode or the wire diameter and spool, and the quantity. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, checks the grade against the Elga product data sheet and can provide the data sheet and the certificates issued with the order on request.
