Danfoss NovoCon S Digital Actuator for AB-QM DN 10-32

Overview

The Danfoss NovoCon S is a high-accuracy, multi-functional field bus actuator designed specifically for the Danfoss AB-QM pressure independent control valve in sizes DN 10 to 32. Combined with the valve, it controls water flow to fan coil units, chilled beams, induction units, small re-heaters and re-coolers, air handling units and other terminal units. Unlike a conventional 0-10 V actuator, it communicates directly with the building management system over BACnet MS/TP or Modbus RTU, which allows remote commissioning, flow indication, alarm reporting and, with optional sensors, energy measurement at every terminal unit.

Operating Principle

The Danfoss NovoCon S drives the AB-QM stem through a 7 mm stroke with a force of 90 N and a position accuracy of ±0.05 mm. Because the AB-QM holds a constant differential pressure across its control part and has a linear characteristic, the stem position corresponds directly to a flow value. That relationship lets the Danfoss NovoCon S act as a flow indicator without a separate flow meter, and lets the BMS set a design flow per unit through the bus instead of a technician adjusting each valve by hand.

Control can come from the field bus or from analog signals of 0-10 V, 0-5 V, 2-10 V, 5-10 V, 2-6 V, 6-10 V, 0-20 mA or 4-20 mA. Speed is selectable at 3, 6, 12 or 24 s/mm, or as constant time. With the Energy cable and two PT1000 sensors on the supply and return pipes, the actuator calculates power emission, logs heating and cooling energy separately, and can apply energy management functions such as minimum delta-T control.

Engineering Design of the Danfoss NovoCon S

The Danfoss NovoCon S is supplied at 24 V AC/DC and consumes 2.7 VA at 24 VAC or 1.2 W at 24 VDC when operating, falling to 1.8 VA or 0.7 W in standby. It operates with supply deviations of up to ±25 %, has mis-wiring protection on any wire up to 30 V and is rated IP 54 (IP 40 when mounted upside down). It mounts on the valve without tools, runs a self-positioning process, and an LED bar shows status and alarms. Ambient temperature range is -10 to 50 °C and the maximum medium temperature is 120 °C, with a weight of 0.4 kg.

All connections use plug-in, halogen-free cables, ordered separately: digital bus and power cables, daisy chain cables between actuators, analog cables, Energy cables with PT1000 sensors, and an I/O cable. The I/O option provides one analog output, one analog input and two resistance inputs, so a room thermostat, window contact, CO2 or humidity sensor can appear on the field bus through the Danfoss NovoCon S. The BACnet device profile is B-ASC, and both protocols support baud rates from 9600 to 115200 bps with automatic detection.

Remote presetting also shortens commissioning on large projects, because design flows can be written to every valve from the BMS workstation.
