Belimo EPIV EP..F+MP Flanged Electronic Pressure Independent Valve DN 65-150

Description

Overview

The Belimo EPIV EP..F+MP is the flanged member of the Belimo electronic pressure independent valve family, built for the large water circuits that feed air handling units, heat exchangers and plant room headers. Each unit pairs a characterised ball valve and rotary actuator with a separate flanged measuring pipe that carries an ultrasonic flow sensor. Instead of relying on a spring-and-diaphragm regulator, the valve measures the real flow and moves the ball until it matches the demand, whatever the pressure in the network is doing. Five sizes from DN 65 to DN 150 cover nominal flows of 8 to 45 l/s, which is 28.8 to 162 m³/h.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Belimo EPIV on request to contractors and plant operators in Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. For buildings where hundreds of small terminal valves are already balanced but the main coils still overflow at part load, the flanged Belimo EPIV sizes close the gap at the points where most of the chilled water actually goes.

Operating Principle

A 2 to 10 V or MP-Bus signal from the controller defines the required flow. Inside the Belimo EPIV, that signal is converted into an equal-percentage characteristic scaled to V’max, the maximum flow chosen during commissioning between 30 and 100 % of V’nom. The ultrasonic sensor reports fluid velocity, the electronics turn it into a flow value, and the actuator trims the ball position to remove any deviation. Pressure changes caused by other circuits opening or closing therefore alter only the ball angle, not the delivered flow. Belimo specifies ±5 % control accuracy over 25 to 100 % of V’nom at 20 °C without glycol, and the valve can be switched to a linear characteristic where required.

Two details matter in practice. Below 1 % of V’nom the flow is too slow to measure reliably, so creep flow suppression keeps the valve closed until the demand exceeds that threshold and closes it again when demand drops under 0.5 %. If the flow sensor fails, the Belimo EPIV falls back automatically from flow control to position control and returns to normal operation once the fault clears, so the coil keeps receiving water rather than shutting down.

Engineering Design of the Belimo EPIV

The valve body and the measuring pipe are grey cast iron EN-GJL-250 (GG 25), the measuring pipe with a protective paint finish, and both use flanges to EN 1092-2 at PN 16. The ball is AISI 316 stainless steel, the spindle AISI 304, and the seat PTFE with a Viton O-ring. Close-off pressure is 690 kPa, the maximum differential pressure 340 kPa, and shut-off is air-bubble tight to leakage rate A of EN 12266-1. Fluid can be water or water with up to 50 % glycol, at -10 to 120 °C.

The actuator of the Belimo EPIV runs on AC/DC 24 V and draws 6 W in operation on DN 65 and 80 and 9 W on DN 100 to 150. Its MP-Bus connection carries setpoint, feedback and diagnostics, and can also digitise a 0 to 10 V sensor or a switching contact wired to the actuator. For BACnet MS/TP or Modbus RTU networks, Belimo lists the UK24BAC and UK24MOD gateways. The valve and the flow sensor may be installed apart from each other, which helps in congested plant rooms, provided an inlet run of at least 5 × DN is kept ahead of the sensor.

Key Features

The Belimo EPIV brings measured flow control to large pipe sizes:

  • Ultrasonic flow measurement with ±2 % accuracy over 25 to 100 % of V’nom at 20 °C and no moving parts in the sensor.
  • Flow held at setpoint independently of differential pressure up to 340 kPa.
  • V’max adjustable on site from 30 to 100 % of nominal flow, replacing manual balancing valves.
  • Equal-percentage characteristic for stable coil control, switchable to linear.
  • Control by 2 to 10 V, variable voltage ranges, 3-point or Belimo MP-Bus.
  • Automatic switch to position control on sensor failure to keep the coil in service.
  • Split installation of valve and sensor, with flanges to EN 1092-2 PN 16.
  • Configuration and diagnostics through Belimo Assistant 2 or the ZTH EU service tool.

Industrial Applications

District cooling is the backbone of many large developments in Muscat and across the GCC, and the economics of a cooling plant depend on how well each building returns warm water. Flanged Belimo EPIV valves are used on the main cooling coils of air handling units in malls, airports, hospitals and hotel towers, on plate heat exchangers in energy transfer stations, and on the secondary loops of central plants, where a few overflowing coils can drag the whole system toward low delta-T. Because the Belimo EPIV measures the flow at each point and caps it at V’max, pump energy is spent only where the load needs it.

Industrial and process sites in Sohar and Duqm use the same valves on process cooling and comfort cooling circuits where the plant layout changes over time. Seven Star LLC can size the Belimo EPIV from coil or exchanger data, recommend the matching gateway for the BMS, and supply accessories such as the ZR24-F05 spindle heater, which Belimo recommends for chilled water installed in warm, humid air. Where the plant also needs billing-grade energy data per circuit, the Belimo EPIV can be combined with the pFlow E8 ultrasonic BTU energy meter.

For small terminal units, a mechanical alternative is the Danfoss AB-QM PICV.

How to Order

For a quotation on the Belimo EPIV, share the coil or heat exchanger schedule, design flow per circuit, pipe size, expected differential pressure and the control method planned for the BMS. Seven Star LLC will check the size against the Belimo flow range, confirm gateways and accessories, and advise on availability and delivery to sites in Oman and the GCC, together with the Belimo technical data sheet for consultant approval. Large chilled water projects often pair these valves with the Dynasonics UHC-120 thermal energy meter and with high-capacity isolation such as the Johnson Controls VFC-060HB butterfly valve.

About brand
Belimo builds the small field devices that move dampers and control water flow in air conditioning plants: actuators, control valves and sensors. The company was founded in 1975 and is based in Hinwil, Switzerland. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists Belimo damper actuators, electronic pressure independent valves and the Belimo Energy Valve for MEP contractors and facility teams in Oman and the GCC.

Belimo actuators and valves on our site

Three items show the range. The LF24-SR is a spring-return damper actuator rated 4 Nm with 2 to 10 V modulating control. The EPIV in the EP..F+MP version is a flanged electronic pressure independent valve for DN 65 to 150 with MP-Bus. The Energy Valve EV..R2+BAC covers DN 15 to 50 and adds a thermal energy meter and BACnet communication.

Ordering Belimo parts: what we need

Belimo type codes carry most of the selection, so send the complete code from the label. Otherwise give the damper area or the torque required, the supply voltage, the control signal, the fail-safe direction, and for valves the DN, design flow, connection type and bus protocol.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Belimo EPIV keep flow constant when system pressure changes?
An ultrasonic sensor in the flanged measuring pipe measures the actual flow, and the actuator adjusts the ball position until the measured value matches the setpoint derived from the control signal. A pressure change therefore moves the ball, not the flow, up to a differential pressure of 340 kPa.
Which sizes does the flanged EP..F+MP range cover?
There are five sizes: EP065F+MP, EP080F+MP, EP100F+MP, EP125F+MP and EP150F+MP, covering DN 65 to DN 150 and nominal flows from 8 to 45 l/s. All have PN 16 flanges to EN 1092-2.
Can the Belimo EPIV connect to a BACnet or Modbus BMS?
The actuator communicates natively over Belimo MP-Bus and also accepts 2 to 10 V or 3-point control. For BACnet MS/TP or Modbus RTU, Belimo lists the UK24BAC and UK24MOD gateways that connect MP-Bus devices to those networks.
What happens if the flow sensor fails?
Belimo states that the EPIV switches from flow control to position control when a flow sensor error occurs, so the valve continues to operate like a conventional characterised valve. It returns to flow control automatically when the error disappears.
Can Seven Star LLC help select a Belimo EPIV for a district cooling project?
Yes. Seven Star LLC supplies the Belimo EPIV in Oman and the GCC and can size valves from your coil or heat exchanger data, recommend gateways and accessories, and provide the Belimo data sheet. Engineering support is available from Muscat.
