Overview

The Belimo PIQCV C2..QPT is a ready-made piping package that brings a pressure independent characterised zone valve, isolation and measuring points together in one assembly for fan coil units and small air handling coils. Instead of building every terminal connection on site from separate balancing valves, strainers, ball valves and a control valve, the contractor receives a compact brass package with Euro cone connections, two measuring ports and a rotary zone valve that accepts a snap-on CQ actuator. The type range covers DN 15 and DN 20 with nominal flows from 210 l/h to 2100 l/h, a working differential pressure of 16 to 350 kPa and PN 25 pressure class.

Operating Principle

Inside the Belimo PIQCV package, a characterised ball valve is combined with an integrated pressure regulating valve. The regulator keeps the differential pressure across the control element constant whenever the available pressure across the whole valve is between 16 and 350 kPa. Because the control element always sees the same pressure drop, the valve reaches an authority of 1, and the flow for any given opening angle stays the same even when pumps ramp up or down or neighbouring terminals open and close. The ball itself is shaped to give an equal percentage characteristic to VDI/VDE 2173, optimised in the opening range, which matches the non-linear heat output of a water coil and gives stable room temperature control.

The maximum flow is set mechanically by limiting the rotation of the CQ actuator with an end stop clip that moves in 2.5 degree steps, within an operating range of 15 to 90 degrees. Two pressure ports at the valve inlet (P1) and outlet (P3) let the technician confirm that the actual pressure drop is inside the 16 to 350 kPa window. If it is, the Belimo PIQCV delivers the flow shown in the setting table. The same measurement at the hydraulically furthest terminal is used to trim the pump head down to the minimum required, which is where most of the pumping energy saving in a variable flow system comes from.

Engineering Design of the Belimo PIQCV

The Belimo PIQCV valve body is brass, the closing element and spindle are stainless steel, the spindle is sealed with an EPDM O-ring, the seat is PTFE with an EPDM O-ring, and the regulator diaphragm is EPDM. The ball valve closes air-bubble tight, leakage rate A to EN 12266-1, and the close-off pressure is 1400 kPa. Fluid temperature is 2 to 90 degrees C and the valve handles cold and warm water or water with glycol up to 50 percent by volume, which covers chilled water for fan coils as well as low temperature heating water.

All Belimo PIQCV variants use G 3/4 inch Euro cone connections, with Belimo pipe connectors available for steel pipe (Rp 1/2 or Rp 3/4) and copper pipe (15 mm or 20 mm). Two connection distances are offered, 40 mm and 80 mm, so the package can be matched to the coil connection spacing of different fan coil designs. The valve can be installed upright to horizontal in relation to the stem, but never hanging with the spindle pointing down, and Belimo recommends installation in the return. A suitable strainer is recommended, and the water quality should follow VDI 2035. The Belimo PIQCV is maintenance-free apart from cleaning the strainer.

Industrial Applications

Fan coil units are the most common terminal in Gulf buildings, and a typical hotel, hospital or office tower in Muscat can have several hundred of them on one chilled water network. When those coils are fed by fixed orifice balancing valves, flow shifts every time a floor turns on or off, and low delta-T at the chiller plant follows. Using the Belimo PIQCV at each coil keeps every unit at its design flow over the whole operating range, so chillers and pumps can run at the temperature difference they were selected for.
