Endress+Hauser Levelflex FMP50 Guided Radar Level Transmitter

Description

Overview of the Endress+Hauser Levelflex FMP50 Guided Radar Level Transmitter

The Endress+Hauser Levelflex FMP50 is a guided wave radar transmitter for continuous level measurement of liquids, pastes and slurries in basic applications. Endress+Hauser positions it as the entry model of the Levelflex family: it is intended for supply, storage and utility duties that do not place high demands on temperature, pressure or chemical resistance, and it carries the successor role to the earlier Levelflex M FMP40. A rod probe reaches 4 m and a rope probe reaches 12 m, with a typical accuracy of ±2 mm.

As the official trusted supplier and regional supplier for Endress+Hauser, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the Endress+Hauser Levelflex FMP50 to customers across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. Plant engineers in Muscat, Sohar and Salalah can request the transmitter together with the official Technical Information, factory documentation and regional technical support.

Measuring Principle of the Endress+Hauser Levelflex FMP50

The Endress+Hauser Levelflex FMP50 is a downward-looking time-of-flight (ToF) system, also known as time domain reflectometry. High-frequency pulses in the range of 100 MHz to 1.5 GHz are injected into a probe and travel along it. When a pulse reaches the product surface, part of its energy is reflected, and the electronics convert the transit time into a distance D according to D = c · t/2. The level L then follows from the entered empty distance E as L = E – D.

The strength of the reflection depends on the relative permittivity (εr) of the medium. Water, acids and alkalis reflect strongly, while hydrocarbons reflect weakly, and the Technical Information lists measurable media from εr 1.6 upward. Because the pulse is guided along the probe, the reading is not influenced by changing media, temperature changes, gas blankets or vapors. The software uses Multi-Echo Tracking, a self-learning evaluation that follows all echoes over time, and a user-activated mapping function that masks interference echoes from fixtures and struts.

Engineering Design of the Endress+Hauser Levelflex FMP50

The sensor is offered as a rod probe in 316L or as a rope probe with a centering rod, with a ¾" threaded connection or an adapter flange. Wetted parts are 316L or 316, PPS and a Viton (FKM) O-ring, which carries FDA approval. The electronics sit in a plastic GT19 housing of about 1.2 kg or a die-cast aluminum GT20 housing of about 1.9 kg, and with the housing closed the transmitter is rated IP68 / NEMA 6P and IP66 / NEMA 4X. The sensor itself adds roughly 0.25 kg before the probe weight.

A two-wire loop supplies the device with 11.5 to 35 V at the terminals in non-hazardous areas. Output options are 4–20 mA HART, PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION Fieldbus, with an optional open-collector switch output on HART versions and an optional Bluetooth interface for the SmartBlue app with a range above 10 m. Failure information follows NAMUR NE 43 with a 3.6 mA minimum alarm or a 22 mA maximum alarm, and a 32-point linearization table converts level into volume or mass. HistoROM stores the device settings and measured values for fast replacement and commissioning.

Key Features of the Endress+Hauser Levelflex FMP50

The Endress+Hauser Levelflex FMP50 combines the Levelflex measuring principle with simple commissioning, and the following points summarize what the manufacturer documents:

  • Accuracy of ±2 mm digital (sum of non-linearity, non-repeatability and hysteresis) with a resolution of 1 mm, plus ±0.02 % on the analog output.
  • Measuring range up to 4 m with a rod probe and up to 12 m with a rope probe in media with a relative permittivity of 1.6 or higher.
  • Process temperature from –20 to +80 °C and process pressure from –1 to +6 bar.
  • Step response time below 0.8 s at 3.6 measurements per second for probe lengths under 12 m.
  • Factory blocking distance of 200 mm that can be reduced to 100 mm for media with εr above 7.
  • Functional safety development to IEC 61508, SIL 2 and SIL 3 in homogeneous redundancy, evaluated by TÜV Rheinland.
  • WHG overfill protection approval (DIBt Z-65.16-501) and international explosion protection certificates.
  • Heartbeat Technology with diagnostics, verification and monitoring, and a menu-guided commissioning concept in six steps.

Industrial Applications of the Endress+Hauser Levelflex FMP50

The Endress+Hauser Levelflex FMP50 suits basic storage and utility tanks holding water, aqueous solutions, alcohols, solvents, mineral oils and fuels, where a rod probe covers shorter vessels and a rope probe covers tall tanks or installations with limited headroom. Typical duties in the Sultanate of Oman include fuel day tanks at power and desalination sites, chemical dosing tanks in water treatment, cooling-water and process-water buffers, and utility vessels in the Sohar and Salalah economic zones. The SIL and WHG approvals also allow the transmitter to serve as a limit or overfill signal where a plant requires one.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Levelflex family to industrial customers throughout Oman and the GCC. Engineers who are replacing an older Levelflex M FMP40 can compare the successor against the existing installation, and plants that need higher temperature or pressure ratings can look at the Endress+Hauser Levelflex FMP51 guided radar or the earlier Levelflex M FMP40. For free-space radar on non-contact tanks, the Endress+Hauser Micropilot FMR20 is a related option.

About brand
Level, flow and pressure measurement account for most of the Endress+Hauser instruments engineers ask us about, and each device is defined by the order code on its nameplate. Endress+Hauser, founded in 1953 and based in Reinach, Switzerland, builds process instrumentation for liquids, gases and bulk solids. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Endress+Hauser (E+H) flowmeters, radar and vibronic level instruments, pressure and temperature transmitters and liquid analysis equipment for plants in Oman and the GCC.

Endress+Hauser product families on this page

Level is the largest group: Micropilot free-space radar (FMR10B, FMR62 and the FMR67 for bulk solids, all 80 GHz), Levelflex guided radar (FMP50, and the FMP55 for interface measurement), the Liquiphant FTL51 vibronic point level switch and the Prosonic S FMU90 ultrasonic transmitter. Flow covers Proline Promag electromagnetic flowmeters (Promag P 300, Promag W 400) and the Prowirl F 200 vortex meter. Pressure is represented by the Cerabar PMP51B, temperature by the iTEMP TMT82 HART transmitter. For liquid analysis the listing has the Liquiline CM444 multiparameter transmitter and Memosens sensors such as the CPS11E pH electrode.

Where Endress+Hauser instruments are used

Water and wastewater plants rely on Promag W meters, radar level and Liquiline analysis. Oil and gas, chemical and power plants specify Levelflex and Micropilot on tanks and separators, Prowirl on steam and gas, and Cerabar on process lines. Food and pharmaceutical producers use hygienic versions of the same families, and cement and mining sites use the FMR67 on silos.

Ordering Endress+Hauser instruments: what we need

Send the order code and, for a replacement, the serial number from the nameplate. The extended order code is better still, because it spells out every option. Without a code we need the medium, pressure and temperature, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output signal or fieldbus, power supply, display and the hazardous area approval required. For flowmeters add line size and liner, for radar the tank height and nozzle size.
