WIKA TR12-B Process Resistance Thermometer

Description

Overview

WIKA TR12-B is a modular process resistance thermometer engineered for demanding temperature measurement in chemical, petrochemical, offshore, and heavy plant construction environments. Built around a spring-loaded, field-replaceable Pt100 measuring insert with extended spring travel, the TR12-B pairs with a wide range of thermowell designs to give plant engineers a serviceable, mechanically robust RTD assembly that can be maintained without shutting down the process line. Its modular design — separate measuring insert, connection head, and neck tube – is exactly the kind of long-service-life architecture that Gulf refineries, petrochemical crackers, and offshore platforms depend on when unplanned downtime carries a real commercial cost.

With engineering support in Muscat, Seven Star LLC supplies the TR12-B resistance thermometer to industrial buyers across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. Every unit we supply is a WIKA product provided with manufacturer documentation and local technical support for plants in Muscat, Sohar, and Salalah that cannot risk substandard instrumentation on regulated process lines.

Measurement Principle

The WIKA TR12-B measures temperature using the well-established resistance thermometry principle: a platinum resistance element (Pt100) changes its electrical resistance in a highly predictable, near-linear relationship with temperature, as standardized in IEC 60751. As the sensing tip absorbs heat from the process fluid or vessel wall, the platinum wire’s resistance rises proportionally, and the connected transmitter or indicator converts that resistance value into a precise, repeatable temperature reading. Because platinum RTDs offer superior long-term stability and accuracy compared with thermocouples, the TR12-B is the preferred choice wherever tight process control and calibration repeatability outweigh the need for extreme temperature range.

The spring-loaded measuring insert is a key operating advantage: constant spring pressure holds the sensing tip firmly against the base of the thermowell, minimizing air gaps and response-time lag while allowing the insert to be withdrawn and replaced without removing the thermowell from the process. In practice this means zero pressure drop, zero contamination risk to the process medium during sensor replacement, and no need to break process containment for routine maintenance — a critical safety and uptime benefit on live petrochemical and offshore systems where isolating a thermowell for service is costly and time-consuming.

Engineering Design of the WIKA TR12-B

Physically, the WIKA TR12-B is built from three interchangeable sections: the measuring insert (the Pt100 sensing element on a mineral-insulated or wire-wound support), the neck tube connecting it to the head, and the connection head itself, available in multiple explosion-protected and weatherproof housing variants to suit hazardous-area classification requirements. The insert is dimensioned to WIKA’s standard insert lengths so it drops directly into compatible thermowells from WIKA’s own range or from third-party thermowell manufacturers already installed on existing process vessels, simplifying retrofits and spare-parts standardization across a plant.

The connection head accepts standard cable gland or conduit entries and terminates the Pt100 element to a terminal block for wiring in 2-, 3-, or 4-wire configuration, with 4-wire connection recommended wherever lead-wire resistance error must be eliminated for high-accuracy loops. Optional integral transmitters can be fitted inside the head to convert the resistance signal directly to a 4–20 mA or HART output at the measurement point, reducing cable runs and signal degradation on long transmission distances typical of large industrial sites. Explosion-protected head variants (Ex d, Ex e) extend the TR12-B’s suitability into classified hazardous areas found throughout Oman’s upstream and downstream oil and gas facilities.

Key Features

The WIKA TR12-B resistance thermometer delivers the reliability and serviceability that process engineers expect from a field-proven RTD platform. Below, the WIKA TR12-B key features are summarized for quick specification reference.

  • The spring-loaded, field-replaceable Pt100 measuring insert allows sensor replacement without removing the thermowell, eliminating process shutdowns for routine maintenance.
  • Class A and Class B accuracy options to IEC 60751 give plant engineers the flexibility to specify tighter tolerance only where the process loop genuinely requires it.
  • A modular head-and-insert architecture standardizes spare parts across multiple installation points, reducing inventory complexity for maintenance teams.

Industrial Applications

Across the region, the WIKA TR12-B is a preferred choice among specifiers. The WIKA TR12-B is deployed extensively across chemical processing, petrochemical refining, offshore oil and gas platforms, and heavy plant and vessel construction, wherever a serviceable, thermowell-mounted RTD is needed on pipework, reactors, storage tanks, or heat-exchanger loops. Its modular, field-replaceable insert design is particularly valued on continuous-process lines in district cooling plants, commercial HVAC chiller loops, and RO desalination systems across the region, where an unplanned shutdown to replace a failed temperature sensor carries a real production and revenue cost. Pharmaceutical and light-industrial manufacturers operating in Oman’s growing industrial zones also specify the TR12-B where calibration traceability and IEC 60751 accuracy classes are part of their quality documentation.

With manufacturer documentation, Seven Star LLC supplies the TR12-B resistance thermometer to project contractors, EPC firms, and plant operators throughout Oman, the wider GCC, and specifically within the Sohar and Salalah economic zones, where petrochemical, metals, and logistics facilities require dependable supply and technical support. Hospitality developments and hospital complexes across Muscat also rely on TR12-B-class RTDs within their building-management and process-utility systems, where accuracy and long-term stability directly affect energy efficiency and comfort control. Our regional presence means technical support in-country rather than routed through a distant overseas distributor.

The WIKA model number tells you the build. In 232.50, the first digit 2 means stainless steel wetted parts, the second digit 3 means a liquid-fillable case, and ".50" is the case style. The 111 series uses copper alloy wetted parts and suits water and air. Where the medium is corrosive, very hot or would block the gauge, a diaphragm seal such as the 990.27 keeps it away from the Bourdon tube. For temperature, a thermowell like the TW10 lets you remove the sensor without opening the process.

Where WIKA instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, WIKA gauges, transmitters and thermometers are used in oil and gas, refining and petrochemical plants, power and desalination, water networks, district cooling and HVAC, and on skids and machines from OEMs.
