VEGA VEGATOR 121 Controller for 8/16 mA Vibrating Switches

Description

The relay interface for two-wire VEGA vibrating level switches

The VEGATOR 121 is the processing unit for VEGA’s vibrating level switches VEGASWING, VEGAVIB and VEGAWAVE in the “two-wire 8/16 mA” electronics version. The switch reports covered or uncovered as a current step, and the VEGATOR powers the loop, evaluates the step and switches a relay for overflow or dry-run protection. VEGA states the signal can come from a hazardous area, the circuit is monitored for line break and short-circuit, and an active fault signal via a relay is optional. A test key allows simple function tests, also for SIL-relevant applications.

What an 8/16 mA switch needs

Two-wire 8/16 mA is VEGA’s standard for plics-based vibrating switches without a relay, because one pair of wires delivers the supply and the status: about 16 mA indicates one state and about 8 mA the other, with line break below 3.6 mA and short-circuit above 21 mA reported as faults. The VEGATOR 121 has a threshold at 11.9 mA, so it sits midway between the two levels, and the internal resistance and terminal voltage listed in the sheet size the loop supply.

Using the test key

The test key, which VEGA describes as a simple and convenient function test also for SIL applications, lets the operator simulate the alarm state without wetting the probe. The module can serve overfill alarms in tank farms and dry-run protection in pump skids, with the sensor field-mounted in a hazardous area. Provide the sensor model, whether you need the optional second relay, and your supply voltage in the RFQ, and confirm the Ex marking with the manufacturer.

Because the controller sits in the cabinet and not in the field, a wiring fault or a failed switch is signalled at the rail module and not discovered only when a tank overflows. For an RFQ, name the exact VEGASWING, VEGAVIB or VEGAWAVE switch it will serve, the supply voltage and the relay load, and have the manufacturer confirm compatibility with the sensor you intend to fit.

About brand

VEGA is a German maker of level and pressure instruments. Bruno Grieshaber founded the company in 1959 in Triberg in the Black Forest, and it has been based in Schiltach since 1975, still family owned as VEGA Grieshaber KG. VEGA is best known for radar level sensors: it introduced the first two-wire radar level sensor in 1997 and the first 80 GHz radar sensor for bulk solids, the VEGAPULS 69, in 2015.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing VEGA radar and guided wave radar transmitters, point level switches, pressure transmitters and signal conditioning instruments for buyers in Oman and the GCC. Sensors are matched from the product code on the type label.

Where VEGA instruments are used

VEGA radar sensors measure level in crude oil and product tanks, separators, chemical reactors, cement and aggregate silos, grain stores and water reservoirs. Compact cable radars are widely used in wastewater pumping stations and flood monitoring. Because 80 GHz radar focuses a narrow beam, it can measure past internal structures in a tank, and it is not affected by the temperature, pressure or vapour above the product, which suits hot Gulf storage tanks.

Ordering VEGA instruments: what we need

The product code on the type label (for example PS64.XXXXXXX) fixes the measuring range, antenna or probe, process connection, electronics and approvals. Send it with the serial number. For a new measurement add the medium and its dielectric constant if known, tank or silo height and internals, process pressure and temperature, process connection, output (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS PA, Modbus or IO-Link), and any hazardous-area or overfill protection approval required.
