SOR 6L Explosion-Proof Pressure Switch

Description

A piston-actuated explosion-proof pressure switch for process skids

The SOR 6L is an explosion-proof pressure switch in the SOR piston-actuated range, a rugged field-mounted instrument with a cast-iron housing. Its sensing element is a force-balance, piston-actuated assembly sealed by a flexible diaphragm and a static O-ring; for some services a metal diaphragm can be welded to the pressure port to eliminate the O-ring. The 6 designates the piston size, which together with the spring sets the adjustable range. The L housing is the conventional explosion-proof enclosure for hazardous locations, and the same piston sizes are also offered in the NN weatherproof aluminium housing.

Typical duties are pump and compressor shut-down, low lube-oil pressure alarms, and unloading or start-stop control on air, oil and water systems. SOR notes that basic models with standard wetted parts suit air, oil, water and non-corrosive processes; corrosive service needs optional diaphragm and port materials.

Setting the range and choosing the options

Set points rise with increasing pressure, so choose the spring so that the working set point falls in the middle of the adjustable range, where the typical dead band quoted applies. Dead band widens with the range, so the lowest range that covers the application gives the tightest reset. Confirm the process fluid against the diaphragm and port material, the electrical load against the switching element, the area classification against the listing needed, and any manual-reset or accessory requirement. A standard model number must carry a designator for every position except accessories.

Documents and quotation

The attached SOR pressure and vacuum switch catalog (Form 216) holds the quick-selection guide, element tables, diaphragm and port options and agency listings, and the general instructions (Form 496) cover installation and setting. Send the piston and range, element, diaphragm, port and approval for a quotation. See more pressure instrumentation.

About brand

SOR, headquartered in Lenexa, Kansas, designs and manufactures electronic and mechanical instrumentation for measuring pressure, temperature, level and flow. The company dates its history to 1946 and describes itself as a DwyerOmega brand. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat and lists its differential pressure transmitters, pressure switches, level switches and flow switches.

Where SOR instruments are used

The company serves the process industries, with significant experience in oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical and power. Its catalogs cover piston-actuated pressure and vacuum switches, 800 Series and 1800 Series pressure transmitters, float-operated and ultrasonic level switches and vane-operated flow switches, many with hazardous-area approvals and IEC 61508 SIL certification for most models.

Ordering from the catalog

Most models are built from a quick-select model code that specifies housing, range, wetted materials, connection, switch element and accessories. Send the full code or the process data (fluid, pressure, temperature, connection and area classification) and we check the configuration against the SOR catalog before quoting. The 815DT, 1800DP, 1510, 1520, 2700 and 6L pages show how the codes are read.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 6 in SOR 6L refer to?
It is the piston size; the piston and spring together set the adjustable pressure range.
What ranges does the 6L cover?
With springs K2, K3, K5 and K45 the adjustable range runs from 7 to 30 psi up to 25 to 275 psi on increasing pressure.
What are the overrange and proof pressures?
The catalog gives 1,500 psi overrange and 2,500 psi proof pressure for piston 6.
What enclosure does the L housing have?
A cast-iron conventional explosion-proof housing rated NEMA 4, 4X, 7, 9 and IP66, listed UL Class I Groups C and D and Class II Groups E, F, G.
What fluids suit the standard model?
SOR states basic models with standard wetted parts suit air, oil, water and non-corrosive processes; corrosive service needs optional diaphragm and port materials.
