SOR 1520 Top Mounted Vane Flow Switch

Description

A vane-operated switch that signals flow or no flow

The SOR 1520 is a vertically mounted, vane-operated flow switch for plant and OEM applications where open or closed contacts must signal a flow or no-flow condition. Liquid flow deflects a vane into the pipe run; the vane extension arm moves a magnet that actuates a hermetically sealed reed switch. A two-cavity body keeps the magnetic and vane arm separate from the electrical compartment, so nothing electrical touches the process.

Typical uses are pump protection against dry running, lube-oil and cooling-water proving, and confirming flow in chemical or injection lines. Because the vane sits in the stream, the switch suits clean-to-moderately-dirty liquids where the pipe can be tapped at a top connection.

Model code and vane length

The code lists body material (B or C), vane material (C, 316SS), process connection (F5A for 1-1/2 in NPT(M), F2A for 2 in NPT(M), or an ASME flange code from 2-1/2 in to 6 in), switch mechanism (W9, W1, L9, L1), housing (EF) and accessories. The catalog example is 1520C-F5A-C-W9-EF-NC. For flanged units the nozzle length must be provided, and flanged units add an X to the model for the extended vane length. The insertion length must reach the process flow, so give the pipe size.

Selection and installation

Flow must reach at least 1 foot per second at the vane for reliable actuation. The vane needs clear travel inside the pipe, so check that nothing in the line obstructs it, and mount the switch vertically with the flow direction arrow aligned with the pipe. For the SIL rating, SOR specifies a one-year proof test interval, low demand mode and a hardware fault tolerance of 0 in a 1oo1 arrangement.

Confirm before ordering: line size and connection, liquid and temperature, working pressure, flow rate at the trip point, contact rating or low-power option, area approval, and the relay accessory if a powered DPDT output is required.

Documents and quotation

The attached SOR 1520 catalog sheet (Form 499) holds the specification and ordering tree, and the general instructions (Form 454) cover installation, SIL requirements and troubleshooting. Send the pipe size, fluid and trip flow for a quotation. See more flow indicators and switches.

About brand

SOR, headquartered in Lenexa, Kansas, designs and manufactures electronic and mechanical instrumentation for measuring pressure, temperature, level and flow. The company dates its history to 1946 and describes itself as a DwyerOmega brand. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat and lists its differential pressure transmitters, pressure switches, level switches and flow switches.

Where SOR instruments are used

The company serves the process industries, with significant experience in oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical and power. Its catalogs cover piston-actuated pressure and vacuum switches, 800 Series and 1800 Series pressure transmitters, float-operated and ultrasonic level switches and vane-operated flow switches, many with hazardous-area approvals and IEC 61508 SIL certification for most models.

Ordering from the catalog

Most models are built from a quick-select model code that specifies housing, range, wetted materials, connection, switch element and accessories. Send the full code or the process data (fluid, pressure, temperature, connection and area classification) and we check the configuration against the SOR catalog before quoting. The 815DT, 1800DP, 1510, 1520, 2700 and 6L pages show how the codes are read.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the SOR 1520 detect flow?
Flow moves a vane whose extension arm moves a magnet, which actuates a hermetically sealed reed switch.
What is the minimum flow rate?
The catalog lists a minimum flow rate of 1 FPS (feet per second).
What are the pressure and temperature limits?
Up to 5,000 psi (345 bar) and -40 to 400 F (-40 to 204 C); agency certifications may affect the ratings.
How must the 1520 be mounted?
Vertically only, through a 1-1/2 in to 6 in NPT(M) or flanged connection, with the vane reaching the process flow.
What contact ratings are available?
General purpose switches are rated 0.9 A at 110 VAC or 3 A at 28 VDC (3 W minimum); low power versions are rated 25 W max.
