Brand:

Trafag EXNAL 8858 Ex Submersible Pressure Transmitter

Description

Intrinsically safe submersible pressure transmitter for tank and sump level

The Trafag EXNAL 8858 is a submersible pressure transmitter for hydrostatic level measurement in hazardous areas. Trafag certifies it Ex ia under Ex SEV 11 ATEX 0145 X and lists a DNV-GL approval, and sells it with PUR or FEP cable for lowering into tanks, wells, sumps and shipboard tanks.

The sensor is piezoresistive with ranges from 0.1 to 25 bar and a 4 to 20 mA output. The housing and pressure connection are 316L stainless steel, with titanium and seawater options for corrosive media.

Typical uses named by Trafag include shipbuilding, and the same construction suits hazardous tanks, wells and sumps where a hydrostatic probe is preferred over a top-mounted level device. The probe hangs from its cable, so the cable length and the strain relief matter as much as the electrical specification. Check that the cable jacket material is compatible with the liquid, and agree the exact cable length with the supplier before ordering because it is fixed at manufacture.

Options and ordering

The ordering code selects the pressure range, sensor accuracy type, pressure connection (open, closed or G1/4 male), cable type, output and accessories. Options listed by Trafag are lightning protection to IEC 61000-4-5 at 10 kA, special oil filling, temperature class T4 or T6, titanium material and a seawater application version.

For level measurement, convert the required water or liquid column to pressure and pick the next higher range, leaving margin for overpressure. Specify the cable length and the measuring medium when ordering.

Installation notes for hazardous areas

Trafag warns in the datasheet that additional measures against static charge are needed for Zone 0 to Zone 20 use with the cable versions. Lay the cable with an earthed metal braid, metal hose or metal pipe as the datasheet requires.

Check the barrier entity values against the loop, route the cable away from mechanical damage and keep the temperature of the medium inside the minus 5 to plus 50 degrees C limit. Follow the Trafag instructions for mounting, venting and cable termination.

About brand

Trafag is a Swiss manufacturer of sensors and monitoring devices for pressure, temperature and SF6 gas density, founded in 1942 and based in Bubikon, Switzerland. Its pressure transmitters, pressure switches, temperature transmitters and thermostats are used wherever robust field instruments are needed, including shipbuilding, hydraulics, railways, large engines, water treatment and test benches.

Instruments for hazardous areas

For explosive atmospheres Trafag offers an Ex range that includes intrinsically safe pressure transmitters, submersible level probes, flameproof pressostats and Ex industrial thermostats, with ATEX, IECEx and UKEX certification depending on the model. These instruments suit oil and gas, chemical and marine installations where gas or dust zones must be respected.

Technology and range

The product range spans piezoresistive and thin-film-on-steel pressure sensors, electromechanical and electronic pressure switches, level sensors, temperature gauges, thermostats and accessories such as damping elements. Trafag publishes a datasheet, instructions and certificates for each product family, so zone, accuracy and connection data can be checked before ordering.

Sourcing through Seven Star LLC

Seven Star LLC supplies Trafag instruments to customers in Oman and the GCC and quotes against the model code, range and approval required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the EXNAL 8858 be used for level measurement?
Yes. It is a submersible pressure transmitter, so it measures the hydrostatic pressure of a liquid column, which is converted to level.
What pressure ranges does it cover?
From 0 to 0.1 bar up to 0 to 25 bar.
What cable types are available?
PUR cable of 6 mm diameter or FEP cable of 5 mm diameter, with the length specified when ordering.
What is its ingress protection?
Minimum IP68.
Are there special materials?
Yes. 316L stainless steel is standard, with titanium and a seawater version as options.
