Keeping fuel-gas hose off the floor with a single-line welding reel

The Reelcraft SWHD76100 OLPT is a single-line spring-retractable welding hose reel for transferring fuel gases. It comes with a 3/8 in. x 100 ft T-grade welding hose, so it can go straight onto a wall or post and supply an acetylene or other fuel-gas line to a work station.

Reelcraft describes the SW series as designed to improve work area safety and raise productivity. The reel has a hard-coated, wear-resistant aluminum double-sealed full-flow swivel and a baked-on powder coat; the page states the reel without hose is UL Listed. The hose is non-conductive, with a synthetic rubber tube compatible with common welding fuel gases, spiral synthetic yarn reinforcement and a red ribbed cover, meeting ARPM IP-7 and CGA E-1 standards for T-grade according to the page.

Single or twin line, and what the code means

SW means single-line welding reel; the 76100 digits give the 3/8 in. size and 100 ft length (SWHD76000, 76005 and 76050 appear in the same manual); OLPT denotes low-pressure T-grade. A single-line reel carries one fuel gas only. For acetylene and oxygen on one reel, the manual covers twin-line TWHD74050 models, and the separate Series TW80000 reel is described on the TW86075 OLPT page.

Delivery information is not stated on the page for this code. Hose is included, so no separate hose order is needed, but the product page lists replacement hose S601163-100 and shorter inlet hoses in T-grade if you need to rebuild the assembly after wear or damage.

Safe use of fuel gas on a reel, from instructions 1310-1019

Form 1310-1019 warns against shutting the fuel gas at the regulator or supply first, since a flashback may damage the hose. Close the torch, then the regulator or supply; when the torch will be idle for more than 30 minutes, bleed what is left after the flame is out. Ventilation must be adequate, above all in confined spaces, to avoid explosive concentrations.

• Mounting height limit is 16 ft unless specified at order.
• Wrap PTFE tape on every input connection; the single-line inlet is 1/4 in. female pipe thread per the manual.
• Re-seat the U-bolt as shown in the manual when the guide arm moves.

Fabrication yards and shutdown work

Fuel-gas reels keep hose lengths of up to 100 ft tidy for cutting and heating stations in fabrication yards, shipyards, pipe spooling shops and maintenance crews on plant shutdowns. In hot Gulf conditions the 150 F limit applies to the reel and hose, so shade cylinders and hoses from direct sun and follow your site hot-work rules. The hose ends use a left-hand 9/16-18 thread, the usual convention for fuel-gas connections, so a standard oxygen fitting will not fit; make sure torch and regulator hardware match the 9/16-18 LH female hose end before buying.

Selection and installation notes

A welding hose reel carries fuel gas, so use only hose and fittings approved for the gas, keep the reel away from ignition sources, fit flashback arrestors and check valves at the torch and at the regulator, test the connections with a leak solution and not with a flame, and follow the site hot-work rules. Replace the hose if it is cracked, burnt or worn.
