A hand-crank reel that stores 100 ft of 3/4 in. garden hose

The Reelcraft GCCA33112 L is a premium duty hand-crank reel for watering and washdown, designed to be mounted centrally and to hold long lengths of hose. It uses all-bolted unitized construction with no welds to fatigue, a full-flow swivel, a heavy-gauge steel frame and spool, and an aluminum drum for long service.

Unlike the spring reels in this selection, this reel is wound by hand. The 12 in. drum stores 100 ft of 3/4 in. hose (outer diameter 1.075 in.). The model ships with a 10 ft x 3/4 in. inlet hose and a 3/4 in. NPT male to garden-hose female conversion fitting, so a standard garden hose can be connected as the outlet. The outlet hose itself is not included.

Reading GCCA33112 L

The family covers 6, 12, 18, 22 and 27 in. drums in the instruction manual (CA30106 to CA33128 codes). In GCCA33112 L the 112 refers to the 12 in. drum, and the suffix L marks the low-pressure version, while M versions are medium pressure. The manual lists drum sizes with a 0.531 in. mounting hole pattern; for this 12 in. unit the page gives a 25.75 in. overall dimension E.

Delivery on the product page is quoted as an estimated 10 business days, with a note to consult Reelcraft Customer Service for large quantities. Because the outlet is a 3/4 in. NH (garden hose) male thread, an ordinary garden hose can be attached without adapters, whereas an industrial hose with NPT ends needs a different fitting.

Mounting and static precautions from instructions 837-696A

Mount on a flat surface using four customer-supplied bolts through the 1/2 in. holes in the side supports, since an uneven surface can bind the reel. A flexible connection is needed to compensate for offset between the supply line and the swivel, and thread compound should be applied to all threads.

• Hold the fluid path with a wrench when removing the hose connector.
• Remove supply pressure before replacing the swivel.
• When working around solvents, paints, chemicals or petroleum products, ground the reel, hose and equipment and check with an ohmmeter.
• Pull hose by the hose itself, not the control handle or swivel.

Washdown points across plants and yards

A central 100 ft reel is practical for equipment washdown, dust suppression and irrigation in camps, workshops and landscaping areas, where laying out loose hose is a trip hazard and leaves hoses to bake in the sun. Hand rewind avoids spring maintenance. The 250 psi rating and 150 F limit mean it is for ordinary water service, not hot water or high-pressure washing. Hand rewinding is slower than a motor but has nothing to wear out electrically, which suits sites where power is not available at the washdown point. Confirm that the 250 psi rating is above the supply pressure at the tap and fit a pressure regulator where the main exceeds it.

Selection and installation notes

A hose or cord reel is selected from the fluid or service, the hose size and length, the working pressure and the mounting position. Check that the hose, swivel and fittings are rated for the fluid and the pressure, mount the reel on a solid surface with the bolts and base the maker recommends, set the spring tension with the hose held, guide the hose to the reel without sharp bends and replace the hose at the first sign of wear. Do not use the reel for a fluid it is not rated for.
