A motor-driven aluminum reel for long hose runs and washdown

The Reelcraft E23012 is a heavy-duty 12 in. spool reel from the Series 20000 range, driven by a 12 V DC direct-drive motor instead of a spring. The motor switch is built into the motor cover, so an operator can rewind hundreds of feet of hose with a flick of a switch. Hose is not included.

Aluminum construction is described as 50% lighter than carbon steel and corrosion resistant. The 3/4 in. fluid path is 316 stainless steel for harsh chemicals, the swivel is stainless rated to 3000 psi, and the hardware has a two-coat plating process that resists salt spray and acids. The polyester powder coat is rated for exposure to up to 20% bleach solution.

The 310 suffix is the tumbled natural finish. Capacity is stated per hose diameter: a 12 in. spool holds 300 ft of 3/8 in., down to 125 ft of 3/4 in. hose, so choose the hose first.

Wiring and installation from instructions 1321-825

The manual calls for a 20 amp auto-resetting circuit breaker (preferred) or 20 amp fast-acting fuse in line with the 12 V, 240 W supply. All power must be removed when wiring and the unit must not be hot-wired; follow NEC and OSHA requirements. Swapping the incoming power changes winding direction.

• Mount with eight customer-supplied bolts through the 0.406 in. holes on a flat surface; a template is printed on the packaging.
• Pressurise the hose fully extended, opening the control valve briefly to purge gas, before winding it on.
• The drag brake is adjusted by a set screw on the hub; ground the reel and hose with a continuity check when working near flammable liquids.

Washdown, spray and utility work

The 150 F limit is lower than the oil reels, so avoid hot fluids and sun-soaked metal surfaces. Hose weight and length drive the motor load, so size the hose to the spool capacity table rather than filling the spool: the 12 in. spool is a compact option for 125 to 300 ft of hose depending on diameter, while the 18 and 22 in. versions of the series hold much more.

A hose or cord reel is selected from the fluid or service, the hose size and length, the working pressure and the mounting position. Check that the hose, swivel and fittings are rated for the fluid and the pressure, mount the reel on a solid surface with the bolts and base the maker recommends, set the spring tension with the hose held, guide the hose to the reel without sharp bends and replace the hose at the first sign of wear. Do not use the reel for a fluid it is not rated for.
