Brand:

Harrington LX Mini Lever Hoist (Mini Puller), 1/4 and 1/2 Ton

Description

A 3.5 lb lever hoist that fits in a tool bag

The Harrington LX is the mini puller in Harrington’s lever hoist line, sold in two sizes: LX003 for 1/4 ton and LX005 for 1/2 ton. With a net weight of 3.5 lb and 5.7 lb respectively, it is a pocket-size rigging tool for pulling wire, tensioning cable, adjusting equipment alignment and light lifting jobs. It has a select lever (UP, DN and neutral N) and a free-chain knob, so the chain can be run to the load quickly and then ratcheted.

The manual identifies LX1B as the latest LX version, with an improved free-wheel function and a bolted bottom hook yoke; check the nameplate for the version supplied.

Operation from the manual

  • Free chaining: move the select lever to neutral N, pull the no-load chain lightly and turn the chain knob counterclockwise; the chain can then be pulled through. Never free-chain with a load on the hoist.
  • Lifting and lowering: set the select lever to UP (lever turned clockwise lifts) or DN (counterclockwise lowers), then ratchet the lever back and forth. Do not operate the chain knob while lifting or lowering.
  • Reset: to reset after free chaining, set the select lever to UP or DN to take up the friction plate clearance.
  • Light loads: under no-load or light-load conditions (about 6 1/2 lb) pull slightly on the load side of the chain if it does not move. For the LX1A model, a load of about 11 lb or less may not produce full braking and slippage can occur.
  • Never lubricate the friction plate of the mechanical brake.

Choosing between LX003 and LX005

LX003 is the lightest option at 3.5 lb and needs 40 lb of lever pull for its 1/4 ton rating. LX005 doubles the rating to 1/2 ton for 5.7 lb of weight and 62 lb pull, with a heavier 4.3 mm chain and 9.7 in headroom. Both have a 5 ft standard lift. For loads above 1/2 ton use the larger Harrington LB.

Inspection

The manual bases inspection on ANSI/ASME B30.21, with frequent intervals from monthly to daily and periodic intervals from quarterly to yearly depending on service. Items include brake pawl, pawl shaft, pawl spring, friction disc and ratchet disc, friction plate thickness, hooks and chain. Load testing is required after disassembly of load-suspending parts.

Applications

A mini puller is used in electrical installation, instrument tubing and cable tray work, HVAC and ducting, vehicle and workshop adjustments, and as a pocket-size spare in plant maintenance kits. The manual notes that no special materials such as spark-resistant ones are used, so it is not specified for explosive atmospheres.

What the manual lets you inspect on a mini hoist

Even a 3.5 lb tool has a full inspection list in the LX manual. The user measures and records the ‘k’ dimension of the top and bottom hook when new (the manual’s Table 4-3), checks the hook latches, and inspects load chain for wear, corrosion and abrasion. The friction plate must be clean, free of grease, oil, scars and gouges and of uniform thickness, with a dimension table in the manual; the friction disc and ratchet disc are inspected for glazing or oil contamination.

The manual states never to lubricate the friction plate of the mechanical brake, to protect the load chain from weld splatter, and not to use the chain as a sling. Parts lists give the LX003 and LX005 their own part numbers, for example top hook assemblies L1XA0031001 and L1XA0051001 and pawl L1XA0039155, which is useful when ordering spares.

Selection and installation notes

A hoist is selected from the rated capacity, the lift height, the duty cycle and the supply or air available, and it must be used only within its rated load under the site lifting procedure by trained people. Check the support structure and the trolley or hook, inspect the hoist, chain and hooks before use, test the brake and the limits at commissioning, never lift people or pull the load at an angle and have periodic examinations carried out by a competent person as the local rules require. Damaged equipment is taken out of service.
