Harrington LB Lever Chain Hoist, 3/4 to 9 Ton Model L5
Description
A heavy-duty lever hoist for pulling, lifting and tensioning
The Harrington LB is a ratchet lever chain hoist (Model L5) with seven sizes from 3/4 ton (LB008) to 9 ton (LB090). Operated by a ratcheting lever, it is the tool for positioning pipe, pulling cable, tensioning guy lines, aligning equipment and lifting in confined places where a hand chain hoist would be awkward. It has a free chain mode for fast hook positioning under no load and an optional load limit warning handle.
Technical specification

| LB090 | 9 | 78 | 10.0 x 3 | 88 | 93 | 4.7 | 26.8 |
Table rows are as printed in the manual’s specification table; the manual lists seven numbered models, with the LB028 (2 3/4 ton) grouped with the LB020 chain size. Pull-to-lift figures in brackets are for hoists with the optional load limit warning handle.
Selecting an LB
Choose by load and by headroom: C ranges from 11.0 in at 3/4 ton to 26.8 in at 9 ton. The pull needed at the lever is 54 lb for LB008 and 69 lb for the 3 ton LB030, rising to 78 lb on LB090 where a triple chain fall keeps the effort low. Where a lever overload indication is wanted for rigging or tensioning jobs, order the optional LLWH, which shows a red signal and reports an overload within about 10% of its set value. For steel plate and fixture positioning before welding, the manual describes shipyard hooks that are designed for tip loading.
Operating and free chain notes
To use free chain, pull out the free knob (it turns counterclockwise and snaps out), pull the chain to length, then rotate the knob clockwise to reset. The manual warns never to operate the free knob while lifting or lowering and not to pull the chain suddenly in free mode. If lever movement does not produce lifting, pull down the load side of the chain lightly. Frequent inspection is monthly in normal service and periodic inspection yearly.
Applications
In the GCC the LB lever hoist is used for flange and pipe alignment in plant construction, pulling pipe and cable, load securing, structural steel positioning, and in shipyards (with shipyard hooks). It is a manual tool and requires no power, which helps on offshore decks and in remote work areas. Use hook latches and never use it for lifting people. Pull-to-lift effort and headroom are the two numbers to compare first when several sizes could carry the load, and the 5 ft standard lift is the figure to check against the working stroke needed between attachment points.
Hook, chain and brake inspection in the LB manual
Hook inspection in the LB manual uses a ‘k’ throat dimension with a discard value, plus ‘u’ and ‘t’ fretting dimensions for each size. For example the LB008 hook has a standard k of 1.73 in with a discard value of 1.8 in, and the LB090 hook 4.37 in against 4.6 in. Shipyard-hook versions have their own rows, such as LB030-SYH with a standard k of 2.72 in.
The load chain is measured on its pitch ‘P’ (it must not exceed the discard value) and wire diameter ‘d’ (it must not fall below it); when the chain is replaced, the load sheave and, on multiple fall hoists, the idle sheave are inspected too. The manual also warns not to use the hoist in a way that repeatedly activates the load limit warning handle.
Selection and installation notes
A hoist is selected from the rated capacity, the lift height, the duty cycle and the supply or air available, and it must be used only within its rated load under the site lifting procedure by trained people. Check the support structure and the trolley or hook, inspect the hoist, chain and hooks before use, test the brake and the limits at commissioning, never lift people or pull the load at an angle and have periodic examinations carried out by a competent person as the local rules require. Damaged equipment is taken out of service.
Information needed for a quotation
Send the full model code, the quantity, the delivery location in Oman or the GCC, the intended use and any accessories needed, so that the complete package can be quoted together.
Documents and supply information
The manufacturer data sheet is attached to this page and should be read together with the project specification and the site risk assessment before a purchase is confirmed. Ratings, standards and dimensions are quoted as printed on that sheet. Lead time, stock position and certificates available with the shipment are confirmed in the quotation, and we supply to Oman and the wider GCC region for industrial, utility and building services projects.
