Harrington ED-DS Dual Speed Single-Phase Electric Chain Hoist

Description

Dual speed lifting from a standard 120 V outlet circuit

The Harrington ED-DS is the dual speed model of the ED electric chain hoist family, a lightweight die-cast aluminium hoist that runs on 120 V single-phase 60 Hz power. Harrington’s catalogue lists capacities from 125 lb to 1050 lb, a low-headroom body and a two-button pendant. Because it needs no three-phase supply, it is easy to place on service carts, workshop jibs, test stands and light monorails where only single-phase power is at hand.

The DS (dual speed) version gives a fast speed for travelling the hook and a slow speed for landing the load. According to the catalogue the low speed can be adjusted from 0 to 100% of maximum by a setting screw inside the pendant. The catalogue also lists a variable single speed V model and a DA cylinder-control model in the same family; this page covers the DS pendant version.

Key features from the catalogue

  • Die-cast aluminium body for low weight and low headroom; the catalogue says it is easy to install, move and store.
  • Compact DC motor fed by a rectifier from AC supply, described as reducing weight and heat while maintaining duty cycles.
  • Heat-treated gearing with deep-groove ball and needle bearings in an oil bath.
  • Friction clutch built into the load brake to slip and prevent overwinding or overtravel.

Selecting the right ED-DS model

Choose by load and by the speed pair. ED125DS is the fastest light-duty unit at 69 ft/min with a 13 ft/min slow speed; ED350DS reaches 66 ft/min with the larger 0.8 Hp motor for 350 lb; ED525DS is the 525 lb unit at 44 / 10 ft/min; ED1050DS uses a double chain fall for 1050 lb at 22 / 6 ft/min. The 20% ED models (ED250DS, ED400DS) have a 10 minute short-time rating, while the 0.8 Hp models reach 20 minutes, so check the cycle count of the planned task against the duty columns above before ordering.

Specify the lift if it differs from the 10 ft standard. Note the 120 V single-phase supply is a US-standard rating; sites with 230 V mains need a supply that matches the nameplate before the hoist is connected.

Installation and operating notes

Hang the hoist from a hook, or use the ET525 mini trolley (adjustable beam width 1.97 to 3.94 in, minimum curve radius 23.6 in, 4.0 lb net) for beam travel up to 525 lb. For the 1000 and 1050 lb sizes, or wider flanges, the catalogue points to the PT005 trolley. Observe the ‘short-time duty’ column: the hoist should not be run continuously beyond that time. Use the limit switch only as a safety backup.

Where the ED-DS fits

Typical GCC uses include maintenance carts in utilities and desalination plants, packaging and bottling lines, laboratories, cold-store plant rooms and workshop benches. With IP54 on the hoist, it should be kept out of wash-down, heavy dust or salt-spray areas unless the buyer confirms suitability with the maker.

Selection and installation notes

A hoist is selected from the rated capacity, the lift height, the duty cycle and the supply or air available, and it must be used only within its rated load under the site lifting procedure by trained people. Check the support structure and the trolley or hook, inspect the hoist, chain and hooks before use, test the brake and the limits at commissioning, never lift people or pull the load at an angle and have periodic examinations carried out by a competent person as the local rules require. Damaged equipment is taken out of service.

Information needed for a quotation

Send the full model code, the quantity, the delivery location in Oman or the GCC, the intended use and any accessories needed, so that the complete package can be quoted together.

Documents and supply information

The manufacturer data sheet is attached to this page and should be read together with the project specification and the site risk assessment before a purchase is confirmed. Ratings, standards and dimensions are quoted as printed on that sheet. Lead time, stock position and certificates available with the shipment are confirmed in the quotation, and we supply to Oman and the wider GCC region for industrial, utility and building services projects.

Related models

For three-phase duty with longer lifts see the Harrington NER/ER electric hoist; for the same platform in other speed layouts, the catalogue lists ED V, DA and DSA models. More lifting equipment is in Material Handling & Lifting Equipment.
