Brand: Harrington
Harrington EM Mini Electric Chain Hoist, 250 to 1000 lb
Description
A compact three-phase hoist for light loads up to 1000 lb
The Harrington EM is the three-phase version of Harrington’s mini electric chain hoist family, built for loads of 250, 500 and 1000 lb. Its body is small enough to hang under a short beam, a gantry or a workstation jib, yet it carries a 24 V pendant circuit, an electronic overload limiter, a friction clutch and upper and lower limit switches. The single-phase twin of the same platform is sold as the SEM; the owner’s manual covers both, and the table below uses the EM (three-phase) figures only.
A typical use is repetitive lifting of valves, motors, pump casings, filter elements, drums and pallets in maintenance bays, workshops and production cells where a full-size hoist would be oversized. The hoist is specified for a single lifting speed, so it suits positioning jobs rather than fine inching.

Key features taken from the manual
- Electronic overload limiter (E-OLL) plus a friction clutch; after an E-OLL trip the pendant DOWN or UP button is held for 2 seconds or the emergency stop is pressed and released to reset.
- Red emergency stop button on the pendant that locks out hoist motion until it is turned clockwise.
- Upper and lower limit switches for over-winding protection; the manual states they are emergency devices, not routine operating stops.
- Canvas or plastic chain container options sized for the lift length; the container’s printed maximum load chain length must not be exceeded.
- Hook latches on both hooks and a hook dimension table (a, b, c, d, e, g) for wear inspection.
Selection and ordering guide
Pick the model by load first. EM001S carries 250 lb at 32 ft/min on 60 Hz; EM003L carries 500 lb at 16 ft/min; EM005C carries 1000 lb at 8 ft/min on a double chain fall, so its body is taller (13.6 in headroom). Specify the lift length when ordering, up to 120 ft for the single-fall units and 60 ft for the 1000 lb unit, and add 0.24 or 0.48 lb per extra foot to the shipping weight.
Confirm phase and voltage on the nameplate: a 230 V class motor will not run on a 460 V supply and the manual warns against operating outside rated voltage. Choose the duty class from the ISO table: for example a hoist under heavy loading (63% to under 80% of capacity) reaching a 1600 hour service limit falls in group M5 per the manual’s worked example.
Installation and operation notes
The gearbox is shipped greased and the manual points to its section 6.2 for later regreasing. Before the first lift, verify chain is untwisted, the chain container is attached with its socket bolts and nuts tightened, and the support structure is adequate for hoist plus load. Below 32 F (0 C) run the hoist unloaded up and down for one minute before lifting. Do not install electronic soft-start or voltage-varying controls; the manual says they can disturb the brake and electrical components.
For outdoor or sun-exposed positions, section 6.7 asks for a cover when not in use, severe-service inspection intervals, a good control-cover gasket and a drain hole of 1/8 in in plastic chain containers; canvas containers are not recommended outdoors.
Applications in GCC industry
The 250 to 1000 lb range fits pump and valve workshops in oil and gas facilities, instrumentation and electrical bays in power and desalination plants, HVAC plant rooms lifting fan motors and coils, and fabrication shops handling small weldments. Hot, dusty or salt-laden sites should be treated as severe service for inspection frequency; the IP65 rating applies to hoist and pendant as stated in the manual, and the manual gives no hazardous-area marking for the EM.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between EM and SEM? EM is the three-phase model and SEM is the single-phase model, identified on the nameplate by product code and voltage.
Which lifting speeds does the EM have? 32, 16 and 8 ft/min at 60 Hz for 250, 500 and 1000 lb, and 26, 13 and 6.5 ft/min at 50 Hz.
Documents and quotation
The attached owner’s manual (EM and SEM series, effective 11 November 2024) is the source of every value above. Values are in US units as printed; the manual describes US supply data, so confirm local supply, plug and chain length before ordering. Send the capacity, lift length, phase and voltage, and any chain container requirement for a quotation.

About brand
Maintenance and plant teams have lifted with Harrington hoists since 1876, when Edwin Harrington introduced the worm-gear design for self-sustaining hoists. Today the Pennsylvania company, part of the Kito group, makes electric chain hoists, hand chain and lever hoists, air hoists and trolleys. Seven Star LLC lists the Harrington NER/ER, EM, ED-DS and RNER2 electric hoists, the CB, CX, LB and LX manual hoists and the TCE and TCL air hoists, and sources Harrington hoists for buyers in Oman and the GCC.
Harrington hoist families
Electric chain hoists run from the 125 lb ED single-phase units to the 5 ton three-phase NER/ER range, with a Class II Division 2 dust-location version in the RNER2. Manual hoists include the CB hand chain hoist up to 20 ton and the LB and LX lever hoists. Air chain hoists include the spark resistant TCE and the lubricant-free TCL.

Frequently Asked Questions
The EM series covers 250 lb (EM001S), 500 lb (EM003L) and 1000 lb (EM005C) in the three-phase version.
The owner's manual states IP65 for both the hoist and the pendant.
ASME H4, ISO M5 and FEM 2m, with 50% ED at 65% capacity under ASME and 40% ED at full capacity under FEM, up to 300 starts per hour.
An electronic overload limiter (E-OLL) and a friction clutch, plus upper and lower limit switches and a pendant emergency stop.
The manual lists no hazardous-area marking for the EM, so it should not be assumed suitable; Harrington offers separate RNER2 hoists for Class II Division 2 dust locations.
