Brand:

Harrington CB Hand Chain Hoist, 1/2 to 20 Ton Model M3

Description

The general-purpose manual chain hoist from 1/2 to 20 ton

The Harrington CB is a hand chain hoist (Model M3) with eleven capacities from 1/2 ton (CB005) to 20 ton (CB200). It needs no power, so it is used in plants for pulling and lifting motors, pumps, gearboxes, valves and pipe spools during shutdowns, on remote platforms, in tanks and in any place where electric supply or compressed air is not available. The standard slip clutch limits overload and the unit uses a mechanical brake with pawl and ratchet.

Hook inspection dimensions are tabulated by size in the manual (for example the CB005 hook has dimension a = 0.8 in, e = 1.4 in; the CB200 hook a = 4.2 in, e = 4.3 in), as are dimensions a, b, d, e, f, g and x for each model.

Choosing a CB size

Match the capacity to the heaviest load and consider the pull force. Pull-to-lift figures range from 25 lb at CB005 to 594 lb at CB150, and the overhaul ratio shows the hand-chain length needed per unit of lift; a large ratio means a lot of chain pulled for each foot raised. Single-fall units (CB005 to CB025) are fastest, double-fall units start at CB030 and the multi-fall CB080 to CB200 trade speed for force. Headroom grows from 11.2 in to 46.5 in, so check clearance under the beam.

Installation and use

Verify the load chain is not twisted, that the top hook rests in the centre of its saddle and that hook latches are closed. Face the hand chain wheel side, pull the hand chain clockwise to raise. Do not lengthen chain by adding links: the manual states Harrington chain is specially heat treated and only genuine chain should be used. Do not disassemble or adjust the slip clutch. Inspect per ANSI/ASME B30.16 intervals: frequent monthly in normal service, periodic yearly in normal service.

Applications

In GCC oil, gas and power facilities the CB is a standard portable lifting tool for shutdowns, vessel internals, pump and compressor maintenance, pipe rack work and offshore or remote locations. The -40 to +140 F range covers desert summers, though the manual does not state salt-spray resistance, so rinse and re-lubricate chain regularly in coastal sites. The manual lists no hazardous-area marking.

Hook and chain wear limits printed in the manual

The CB manual turns inspection into measurable limits. Each hook has a nominal ‘k’ throat dimension (for example 1.76 in on the CB005, 3.06 in on the CB050 and 5.62 in on the CB200); the installer records the actual ‘k’ when the hook is new and the hook is replaced when it opens to 1.05 times that value. Fretting wear is checked with the ‘u’ and ‘t’ dimensions, which must not fall below the discard values: the CB010 hook has a standard u of 0.86 in and a discard value of 0.77 in, and the CB100 a standard 2.48 in against 2.23 in.

Further tables cover chain pin hole and top pin hole wear on the yoke and the body top pin, and the manual instructs replacement of the hook set or yoke when a pin hole exceeds its discard dimension. Brake parts such as the pawl, pawl spring, friction disc and ratchet disc are visually inspected, and a hoist idle for more than a month is inspected to frequent criteria, or to periodic criteria if idle over a year, before it returns to service.

Selection and installation notes

A hoist is selected from the rated capacity, the lift height, the duty cycle and the supply or air available, and it must be used only within its rated load under the site lifting procedure by trained people. Check the support structure and the trolley or hook, inspect the hoist, chain and hooks before use, test the brake and the limits at commissioning, never lift people or pull the load at an angle and have periodic examinations carried out by a competent person as the local rules require. Damaged equipment is taken out of service.

Information needed for a quotation

Send the full model code, the quantity, the delivery location in Oman or the GCC, the intended use and any accessories needed, so that the complete package can be quoted together.

Documents and supply information

The manufacturer data sheet is attached to this page and should be read together with the project specification and the site risk assessment before a purchase is confirmed. Ratings, standards and dimensions are quoted as printed on that sheet. Lead time, stock position and certificates available with the shipment are confirmed in the quotation, and we supply to Oman and the wider GCC region for industrial, utility and building services projects.
