Flowserve Valtek ShearStream HP Segmented Ball Valve
Description
ShearStream HP segmented ball control valve for harsh process streams
The Flowserve Valtek ShearStream HP is a segmented V-notch ball control valve designed for processes that carry particles, fibres or abrasive media. It is the robust, higher-pressure member of the ShearStream series, which also includes the ShearStream SB for general duty and moderate pressure ratings.
A straight-through port gives high flow capacity and large turndown, and the characterised ball sector gives smooth control. Seven Star LLC supplies the ShearStream HP in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

How the ShearStream HP controls flow
The ball is a segment of a sphere with a V-shaped notch. As the actuator rotates it, the notch opens progressively past the seat, giving a shearing action at the seat edge that helps cut through fibres and slurry instead of trapping them. The bore is unrestricted at full open, so pressure loss is low.
Flow is bi-directional because the flexible metal seat uses the pressure drop across it to improve sealing in both directions. This is useful where flow direction can reverse during upsets or transfers.
Seat choices for ShearStream HP
The flexible metal seat suits abrasive and hot service. The soft seat, with PTFE or PEEK inserts, improves shut-off where particles are not severe and can have a metal back-up seal for fire or temperature excursions. The heavy duty seat is for high pressure drops: a sealed wave spring keeps seating force constant, and its soft version uses an UHMWPE insert. Choose by considering the solids content, temperature and leakage class together.
ShearStream HP in the control loop
The valve is normally supplied with the Valtek spring cylinder rotary actuator, a compact, high-torque unit with good throttling stiffness, and a positioner from the Valtek XL, Logix 500si or Logix 3000IQ lines. The Logix 3000IQ gives HART or Foundation Fieldbus communication, the 500si is a compact intrinsically safe digital unit, and the XL is a dual-stage analogue positioner. The lighter ShearStream SB shares the concept but is limited to Class 150 and 300 and sizes to 20 in, so check class before choosing between them.
ShearStream HP selection checklist
- Fluid, solids content and particle size, and whether the stream is two-phase.
- Flow range, inlet pressure, pressure drop and operating temperature.
- Size and pressure class (150 to 600), flanged or wafer.
- Body and trim material for corrosion and erosion.
- Seat type: flexible metal, soft or heavy duty, and shut-off class.
- Actuator fail action and supply air pressure.
- Positioner type, communication protocol and hazardous area rating.
- Packing choice, including low-emission arrangements.
Installation and maintenance of ShearStream HP
Install with straight pipe around the valve where possible, and orient the shaft horizontally in slurry service so solids do not settle in the bearings. Flush the line before commissioning to remove weld debris, which damages seat faces. Stroke test the actuator and calibrate the positioner on site, and record the signature of a healthy valve. The one-piece body and removable seat make maintenance simple; keep a spare seat, packing set and ball sector for critical services.
Packing options in the ShearStream series include the SafeGuard packing set, a tested arrangement to ISO 15848-1 for low fugitive emissions. If your specification requires it, state the emission class in the enquiry so the correct packing is quoted.
Good turndown matters for valves in recycle and pH control loops. Give the minimum and maximum flow in the enquiry so that the ball sector, actuator torque and positioner are checked at both ends of the range, not only at the design point.
ShearStream HP applications in Oman and the GCC
Use cases include chemical and petrochemical streams with solids, power-plant ash sluice and slurry water, mineral and desalination brine with entrained particles, and pulp or fibrous process fluids. Where globe or butterfly valves are unsuitable because of plugging or erosion, a segmented ball is often the practical choice. Pair the valve with an actuator and positioner enclosure suited to hot, dusty outdoor conditions.

About brand
Flowserve is the American flow control company for pumps, valves, mechanical seals and valve automation, known through brands such as Durco, Worthington, Byron Jackson, Valtek, Limitorque, Worcester, Logix and Argus. It was formed on 22 July 1997 by the merger of equals of Durco International and BW/IP, whose heritage reaches back to Simpson & Thompson (1790) and Byron Jackson (1872). Flowserve Corporation is headquartered in Irving, Texas, and listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Flowserve pumps, seals, control valves, ball valves, actuators and positioners for process plants in Oman, working from the nameplate data and the manufacturer's documentation.
