Flowserve CSX Multistage Membrane Feed Pump for Reverse Osmosis
Description
Flowserve CSX multistage membrane feed pump for SWRO
The Flowserve CSX is a multistage, segmental-ring, diffuser-style pump with stacked impellers and an axial balance device, developed specifically as the high-pressure membrane feed pump in reverse osmosis desalination plants. Its hydraulics were designed with computational fluid dynamics and then validated by testing, and the aim is low energy use and long life at the heart of the RO train.
Seven Star LLC supplies Flowserve CSX pumps in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat. A product brochure is attached on this page. The CSX is a range; size, stage count and bearing arrangement are set from your plant conditions.

How the CSX segmental-ring design works
Each stage consists of a ring-less, precision-cast impeller and a matching precision-cast diffuser and channel ring. The diffuser gives the liquid a continuous passage around the impeller, helping to balance radial loads and avoid efficiency loss. Stages stack along the shaft, and the segmental construction lets the same hydraulic building blocks be configured for different head requirements.
Axial thrust is balanced by a hydrodynamic axial bearing design, which cuts the leakage or flushing flow that a conventional balance device needs and supports higher efficiency. Each impeller is individually dynamically balanced, and a stiff rotor limits deflection to extend bearing and seal life.
CSX bearing configurations and options
| Configuration | Bearings | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| Fully product lubricated | Hydrodynamic axial thrust and sleeve radial | No oil or grease, no high-pressure seals or bearing housings; fewer parts and lower weight |
| Oil lubricated | Sleeve radial and ball thrust | Traditional arrangement; can be converted to product lubrication with few modifications |
In SWRO service the product water is used for bearing cooling, so no external cooling water supply is needed. A standardised seal chamber provides a suitable environment without elaborate flush systems. The pump is compatible with RedRaven IoT condition monitoring packages.
Where the CSX fits in an RO plant and related pumps
In a seawater RO train, the CSX sits downstream of the pretreatment and cartridge filters and delivers the pressure that forces water through the membranes. It is the main energy consumer in the plant, which is why efficiency matters so much. For other desalination duties, Flowserve lists related equipment such as the DMX-RO high-pressure feed variant of the DMX pump; the CSX is the dedicated multistage design for this service within the 152 to 250 mm size range.
A mismatch between feed pump and plant conditions is costly, so duty data should be reviewed before an order: the CSX is limited to 45 °C and to filtered liquids, and these limits apply to every operating case including start-up, flushing and cleaning cycles. Where the feed temperature is higher, or the liquid carries solids, the pump is not the right choice and another design should be considered.
For higher-temperature or hydrocarbon duty, between-bearings API pumps such as the HED or UZDL are the right class instead, not the CSX.
Selection and ordering checklist for the CSX
- Required flow per train and the feed pressure needed by the membranes
- Seawater or brackish feed: salinity, temperature range and chemical dosing
- Number of units and duty or standby arrangement; 50 or 60 Hz and VFD use
- Bearing type: product lubricated or oil lubricated
- Material grade: super duplex A890 5A or 6A
- Nozzle head orientation and flange standard
- Drive and coupling arrangement, plus baseplate
- Energy-recovery integration and control philosophy
CSX installation, commissioning and maintenance
Seawater feed pumps require clean, filtered liquid. Confirm filtration and flush the piping before connecting the pump, since solids will damage the close clearances in the diffuser stack. Align the coupling carefully, and run the first starts with controlled ramping, especially on variable frequency drives, so that pressure rises within the limits of the membranes.
Wear rings are made of thermoplastic and can be replaced to restore clearances and keep efficiency high. Plan spares for wear rings, seals and bearing parts, and provide nameplate details when requesting parts.
CSX applications in Oman and the GCC
The Gulf region depends heavily on seawater reverse osmosis for drinking water, and SWRO plants along the coast supply a large share of municipal and industrial water. A high-efficiency feed pump directly cuts the plant energy bill, and corrosion resistance matters because the seawater is warm and saline.
Brackish-water RO and other filtered high-pressure duties at ambient temperature are also within scope. Specify the intake temperature and salinity range of your site so the correct material grade can be confirmed.
Information to send with a CSX RFQ
- Duty flow, required discharge pressure and number of pumps
- Feed water analysis, temperature and any chemicals dosed
- Material grade and bearing arrangement
- Driver data and frequency
- Delivery location and timeline
Site conditions in Oman for the CSX
Pump selection in Oman has to account for the site, not only the duty point. Process liquids and cooling water can arrive warm in summer, which raises vapour pressure and reduces the available NPSH, so check the NPSH margin of the CSX at the highest expected liquid temperature. Motors on outdoor skids also work in high ambient air, and their rating, enclosure and cooling should match that environment.
For hygienic and process plants in the Gulf, plan the spare parts that wear first, such as seals, O-rings and bearings, and keep the material certificates with the plant records. Sharing the fluid, temperature, flow, head and cleaning regime with the supplier at RFQ stage makes it easier to confirm that the CSX is the right configuration before the order is placed.

FAQ
Questions about the Flowserve CSX Multistage Membrane Feed Pump for
Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.
01What is the Flowserve CSX used for?
The CSX is a multistage, segmental-ring, diffuser-style pump designed as the high-pressure membrane feed pump in seawater and brackish water reverse osmosis plants. It can also serve other high-pressure duties with filtered liquids at ambient temperature.
02What operating limits are published?
Sizes from 152 to 250 mm (6 to 10 in), flows to 1,500 m3/h (6,604 gpm), heads to 840 m (2,756 ft), design pressures to 100 bar (1,450 psi) and temperatures to 45 C (113 F). It operates at 50 or 60 Hz and is compatible with variable frequency drives.
03Which materials are available for seawater service?
Wetted parts are offered in corrosion-resistant materials that resist pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, including ASTM A890 Grade 5A (standard) and 6A super duplex stainless steel.
04What bearing configurations does the CSX offer?
Two are available. The fully product-lubricated version uses hydrodynamic axial thrust and sleeve radial bearings, eliminating oil or grease, high-pressure seals and bearing housings. The oil-lubricated version uses sleeve radial and ball thrust bearings and can be converted to product lubrication.
05Can the suction and discharge heads be repositioned?
Yes. The nozzle heads are independently configurable and can be rotated in 90-degree steps, so the pump suits different piping layouts without redesigning the casing.
