Delta DVP-SV3 Slim PLC, 64K Steps, Ethernet and CAN

Description

Delta DVP-SV3 slim PLC: third-generation CPU with 64K steps

The Delta DVP-SV3 is a compact, slim-format programmable logic controller from the third generation of the DVP family. Instead of the older DVP core, it borrows the 32-bit high-speed processor used in Delta’s AS series, which is how it reaches a quoted 25 ns for a basic instruction and a program memory of 64K steps. For plant engineers this means a small controller that can still carry a long ladder program, several communication roles and a mid-sized I/O list without stepping up to a modular rack PLC.

Delta positions the DVP-SV3 against its own second-generation controllers as an upgrade in three areas: capacity, information security and interoperability. The programming tool is DIADesigner, which the manufacturer presents as a step forward in both security and system integration. Seven Star LLC supplies the DVP-SV3 and its siblings in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

Decoding the model names

The page lists three ordering models: DVP28SV311T, DVP28SV311R and DVP28SV311S. The common part, 28SV3, reflects the 28 built-in I/O points of the SV3 CPU module. The final letter is the output type: T is an NPN transistor output, R is a relay output and S is a PNP transistor output. The input and output counts are the same on all three.

How the DVP-SV3 controller is organised

The DVP-SV3 CPU module combines processor, program memory, built-in I/O and the communication ports in a single slim housing. A scan cycle reads the 16 inputs, runs the user program, and writes the 12 outputs, while the communication ports are serviced in parallel. Because the core is the same family as the AS series, instruction-level performance is far above the earlier DVP-S line, and the larger memory allows recipe tables, positioning profiles and communication maps to sit inside one project.

Two RS-485 ports provide serial links such as Modbus to drives, meters and operator terminals. The Ethernet port handles Modbus TCP and EtherNet/IP; the CAN port runs CANopen DS301 and can supervise up to 64 slaves. The Micro SD interface offers an easy route for backup or data storage, and the USB port is meant for download and monitoring from a laptop.

Where the DVP-SV3 fits and what it works with

Delta groups the DVP-SV3 with the DVP-SX3 and the DVP-SE2 inside the slim PLC range. The DVP-SX3 shares the CPU core and memory limits but adds analog channels, while the DVP-SE2 is a second-generation unit with two Ethernet ports. Motion tasks that go beyond what a slim CPU should carry belong on the DVP-50MC (EtherCAT) or DVP-15MC (CANopen) motion controllers.

The datasheet states that expansion is possible on both sides of the CPU, with up to 8 modules per side. Check the module catalogue for which digital, analog, temperature and communication modules are approved for the third-generation slim CPU before you finalise a bill of materials, because not every earlier DVP module is guaranteed to be compatible.

Selecting a DVP-SV3 model

  • Output type: choose T for NPN-sink wiring, S for PNP-source wiring, R when you must switch AC loads or mixed voltages directly.
  • I/O count: 16 inputs and 12 outputs built in; add modules on either side if the list exceeds this, up to 512 points in all.
  • Analog needs: if analog signals are limited to a few channels, check the DVP-SX3 as an alternative with built-in analog I/O.
  • Network role: confirm whether the controller is an EtherNet/IP scanner, an adapter, or a Modbus TCP node, and count the CANopen slaves.
  • Software: confirm that your engineering workstation has DIADesigner and that existing projects can be migrated.
  • Panel supply: the CPU is 24 VDC powered, so the panel needs a suitably sized 24 V supply.

Installation, commissioning and spares for the DVP-SV3

Mount the controller on a DIN rail inside a clean, ventilated panel and keep low-voltage signal wiring away from motor and contactor cables. The removable terminal blocks simplify replacement of a unit without rewiring: pull the blocks, swap the CPU, and plug them back. Always power down before inserting or removing modules on the expansion sides.

During commissioning, load the program through USB or Ethernet, check the output type against the field devices, test each communication port against its partner device, and save a copy of the final project and the parameters on the Micro SD card or on a secured laptop. Keep one spare CPU of the same model letter (T, R or S) on the shelf for critical machines, plus spare terminal blocks.

Relay outputs wear with switching cycles, so use the transistor models for fast or frequent switching and add interposing relays or suppression on inductive loads.

Typical DVP-SV3 applications in Oman and the GCC

The manufacturer lists positioning control, material cutting machines with high-speed servo control, crane main hoists, servo-driven material clips, optoelectronics equipment, semiconductors, textiles and HVAC. In Oman and the GCC, the same attributes suit packaging lines, skid-mounted utility packages, water treatment and pumping stations, HVAC plant control and OEM machinery built in the region.

For equipment installed in hot, dusty or humid locations, the controller should sit in a rated, ventilated or air-conditioned enclosure; confirm temperature and humidity limits in the hardware manual before choosing the enclosure.

DVP-SV3 compared with sibling slim controllers

Series Key points
DVP-SV3 28 I/O (16 DI + 12 DO); Ethernet, 2 x RS-485, USB, CAN, Micro SD; 64K steps; DIADesigner
DVP-SX3 20 I/O (8 DI + 6 DO + 2 AO + 4 AI); built-in analog; 64K steps; DIADesigner
DVP-SE2 28 I/O (16 DI + 12 DO); two Ethernet ports with switch; 64k steps; ISPSoft

The three share the 512-point ceiling and left and right expansion, but differ in the CPU generation, built-in analog and Ethernet layout.

Delta PLC families and the DVP slim line

Delta's controller program runs from the DVP series through the modular AS series to the AH series. Inside the DVP series, the slim CPUs (among them DVP-SS2, SA2, SX2, SV2 and SE) take slim expansion modules on their right side. The DVP04AD-S2 is one of these: a four-channel analog input module for voltage or current signals, which the CPU reads with FROM and TO instructions.
