Overview
The Siemens SIMATIC S7-400 IF963-RS232 (6ES7963-1AA10-0AA0) is an interface submodule that provides an RS232 physical interface for point-to-point (PtP) coupling with the CP 441 communication processor (CP 441-1/-2, 6ES7441-xAA05-0AE0 generation). It plugs into an interface slot on the CP 441 and does not take any separate slot in the S7-400 rack.
With the IF963-RS232 fitted, the CP 441 can exchange serial data with RS232 devices such as printers, barcode readers, scales, modems and third-party controllers. Different IF963 submodules give the CP 441 different physical interfaces. The RS232 version is used for short links, and the IF963-X27 (RS422/RS485) is used for longer links.

The Siemens CP 441 manual is explicit about which interface submodule generation fits which processor. CP 441-1 and CP 441-2 up to order number 6ES7441-xAA04-0AE0 use the older IF963 modules ending in -xAA00-0AA0. CP 441 from order number 6ES7441-xAA05-0AE0 must be fitted with the -xAA10-0AA0 modules, which includes this RS232 version. The two generations are not interchangeable, and they differ mechanically: the older module is screwed into the CP, while the -1AA10 module latches into the bay.
Within the same generation there are two alternative physical interfaces for the CP 441 bays: the 20 mA TTY module (6ES7963-2AA10-0AA0, up to 1000 m at 9600 bit/s) and the X27 RS422/485 module (6ES7963-3AA10-0AA0, up to 1200 m at 19 200 bit/s). The RS232 module is not galvanically isolated; the other two are.

Before an interface module is inserted or removed, the manual requires the power supply module to be unplugged or the CP 441 to be taken out of the rack. The module is pushed into the bay until it latches, and it is released by pressing the catches on its sides.
The front connector is a 9-pin sub-D male with the standard RS232 signal set; signal ground is pin 5. Siemens instructs that only shielded connector housings are used, with the cable shield bonded to the housing over a large area on both sides. The shield must never be connected to GND, and GND (pin 5) must be connected at both ends, because either fault can destroy the submodules. Maximum cable length is 15 m.
